“Technically,” Eloise says, all jittery and delighted, her sweaty hand clutching Penelope tight. “It’s a curtain pole, so you might have to use your imagination a bit.”
She follows Eloise’s pointed finger and sees it – a big, wooden pole wedged into the family’s perfectly manicured lawn; the rainbow of ribbons fluttering in the soft breeze, looped like a crown about the top.
“What is all this?” She blinks at everything slowly, wonders if it’s some ridiculous mirage cooked up by her wanting mind.
“You’re going to be our May Queen, of course,” Eloise says, twisting Penelope into a clumsy spin. “Colin has set the entire thing up. Isn’t it fun?”
