The worst part is, with all of this, Dad bears the widest smile—wider than Josh has seen in a very long time. And out comes, in stilted syllables and a cheerful voice (why does it sound so cheerful?), “Ah, hello, Joshua! Or, I assume that’s your name? My, you look a lot older than in the picture!”
All Josh can think is that, whatever that is, it is not Dad.
Or, Dr. Coomer manages to swap places with the Player, and everyone is left grappling with the consequences.

He should have known when they got out of the car their first time at the coast and Lambda raced down the sand to the water so fast that Gordon tripped straight out of his sandals trying to keep up with her. When he stood barefoot on the wet sand, watching her shift from a bounding fox into a gull, then a sleek sea lion, then a sturgeon as she leapt from wave to wave – he should have known then that she would never be happy out of the water again.

“I’m - it’s - glasses?” Gordon tried, frantically attempting to remember what his character model looked like right now. Wait, wasn’t he supposed to have the HEV suit’s hood on? Had he forgotten to do that?
“No, it’s not,” Benrey said, and reached up with both hands toward Gordon’s temples. “What is this?”
Gordon shoved out to try to push Benrey away, but then -

See, Gordon was pissed at himself. He had already been feeling utterly pathetic the whole day not being able to help the rest of the team to fight off the soldiers that had been attacking them, his lack of arm and foggy mind had been making him feel helpless all this time. How much more pathetic could he get ? By kissing the guy he swore he hated with his guts, of course.
Benrey, Benrey, Benrey, it was always that asshole. Always antagonising Gordon and now making him feel things that were way too complex to unpack in his current state of mind.
Whatever, he'd just bottle up all of his complicated feelings and ignore them forever, that's what he usually did.

Originally written between midnight and 2am back in 2024, I decided to rework the whole thing because I did have some good ideas back them. Very proud of this since it is technically my first hlvrai fic (I'm late to the party, I know) so I hope you will enjoy it <3

Summary
What do you do if someone wronged you and nobody seems to really care about it ? Do you just swallow that shit and move on or do you start throwing your weight around ?
There is probably a balance to achieve between taking up the space you need to make sure nobody fucks with you but also not going so harsh as to try and control those around you. How annoying. Wish it was easier.

Goodbye, Gordon. Goodbye, indeed. You say it to yourself as you leave the house for work. If it’s in the robotic voice of a certain gnome, you try not to think about it.
