He plays basketball to take a break from things. Those things might be his therapy sessions, or his mother's phone calls, or the empty stretch of time growing longer on his résumé, or Tanner's birthday, or the past, or the conferences he isn't attending, or Abby's visits, or the broken door to the storage shed, or the future.
Or Robby.
Sometimes he simply wants a break from all the words he's learned in psychotherapy. So he learns basketball lingo instead. Layup. Alley-oop pass. Jump shot. Field goal.

The color goes out a little around the edges of Robby’s vision. He blindly thanks whatever formless nothing holding them all like dice, which Jack calls God and Robby refuses to pin down and name out of fear that it’s all just his mother, that he didn’t hit his head.
The ground is wet. It smells like farther south sometimes, this part of town after it rains. Maybe that’s why he goes so far from home when he’s not bound to a hospital and a clock.
“Shut the hell up and get in your car.”
“Yessir.” He’s so obvious it stings.
Robby hangs up and fumbles through enough savviness to send a string of coordinates, and receive a thumbs-up from Langdon. The last message either of them sent was a blurb from Langdon well past midnight from six days ago, left on read: do u actually think im any good at this shit or is every1 just rly good at lying to me

The heat of the day has yet to die, and it probably isn’t the ideal time of year to be having sex in someone’s pre-2000s stationwagon, and Frank Langdon certainly isn’t the ideal person to be having it with, but for some reason, pretty much unknown to herself, Trinity is going to propose it to him. And she’s pretty sure he’s going to say yes.
