Summary
As much of a mystery as Mike was, Will had come to understand at least one thing. Mike needed to be needed.
Will felt like a lightbulb had gone off in his head when he’d come to the realisation.
The dealing, the sex, the taunting texts – it all made sense. People came to Mike to get what they needed, whether that be drugs, an orgasm, or the last word in a fiery exchange.
The goading messages were a test, Will had decided – a constant push and pull, Mike seeing whether Will would come back and defend himself against his harsh words.
In a way, Will was no better than the people traipsing Mike’s door at all hours of the night. He did need something from Mike, just the same as everyone else.Or:
Ending up on the infamous roster of the college drug dealer was not in Will's college plans. He'd had a list — a real one, written down — of how this year was supposed to go. Mike Wheeler was not on it. None of this was.

“So how can this keep happening?” Michelle continues, throwing her hands up. “I know what I like. I tell them what I like. Somehow, they still manage to screw it up. I—”
“Maybe they get in their heads.”
Michelle narrows her eyes at her. “You know what’s crazy?”
“No, and I genuinely don’t want to,” Willow says, but god, she doesn’t want to guess either. Which would really be worse, though? Knowing or filling in the blanks?
It seems it’ll boil down to the latter, since Michelle doesn’t speak for a while. Instead, she worries her bottom lip, studying Willow. In that one long second, Willow almost convinces herself that Michelle will drop it, and that’s probably for the better.
Except she’s not that lucky.
“Well,” Michelle says slowly, “I genuinely think I'd do a better job.”

Willow has spent a decade learning how to put all her feelings and desires in a box. Then Michelle comes home from another terrible hookup, determined to prove she’d be better at getting girls off than any guy she’s ever slept with.

"“So do you want it?” Mike asked again. He didn't hesitate, sliding his hand even further up Will’s thigh, the touch heavy, and leaving no room for escape.
“Do you want to gain more experience, Will?”
Will looked over at Mike, whose gaze was intensely focused and seemed to be consuming Will. The weight of a decade-long crush crashed over him all at once, mixed with a sudden spike of anticipation that made his hands tremble. “I want it so bad,” Will whispered, his voice cracking.
“Let me at least show you. Then you can decide if it’s still a bad idea,” Mike said casually, the sharp lines of his face softening into a confident smirk.
Mike shifted his weight, sitting up fully to match Will against the wooden headboard, crowding him into the corner of the bed. Will sat completely frozen, his back pressed hard against the wall, his hands locked in his lap. He couldn’t believe this was actually happening. Mike was leaning over him, looming large and warm, offering to touch him. It felt like a fever dream, fake and entirely disconnected from reality."
