Her profile was caught in silhouette by the blue sky, shockingly familiar. A hint of golden hair in the sunlight. “Normally people say ‘thank you’ in these situations. Not that I’m one to tell you your business.” That voice, higher pitched than Webby was used to, but still familiar even without the honeyed, breathy quality that it would gain as it matured over the years.
Webby nearly lost her grip and fell over with realization.
Easy now, the assessing part of her thought. This isn’t the first time you’ve gone to the past.
There were other possible explanations for the scene before her, the small city with its absent technology and old clothing. She could, conceivably, find a reason for the strange tableau that wasn’t time travel. An elaborate themed village, a digital simulation, holograms...
But there was no mistaking the person beside her. Even if she was younger than Webby had ever seen her, even if she also wore a muted, drab and baggy dress along with a weather-worn bonnet on her head. Beneath it was the same gold-spun hair, if shorter with curls clinging to her scalp. And it was the same green eyes. Emerald flecked with gold.
