Summary
They called it friendship because it was easier to call it that rather than what it was becoming. They were Mel and Frank, and one day, they fell in love. Prior to that, they were the best of friends, and it's important that what they have isn't rushed. Frank won't make that mistake again. Neither will Mel.
OR:
Instead of Langdon and Robby having that conversation in the finale, they have it during the fireworks outside, and it's much more heated. Nasty words are exchanged, Langdon punches Robby in the face, and Robby tries to kill himself shortly after. And that night, punching an attending became the starting point of everything that comes after.
Which (coincidentally, in its own, twisted way) is how Mel and Frank come to be.

Summary
“Yes. I’m supposed to leave next week, and she set up a double date for her brother and I.” She looks at Frank, her forehead still wrinkled. Frank wants to smooth those lines away with his thumb. “It would be rude to cancel, wouldn’t it?”
“Yeah,” Frank confirms, and Mel’s shoulders drop. Frank feels the words rising up, and he knows he’s going to say them. Mel’s roommate wants to set her up. Mel needs a convenient excuse to get the roommate off her back. “I could go with you.”
“Oh,” Mel says, very quietly. She studies him from beneath her eyelashes, the frames of her glasses. “That’s very kind of you, Frank. I would be happy to have a friend there.”
“No, uh.” Frank stops, swallows thickly. “I could pretend to be your boyfriend. Get you out of those dates.”

Summary
Mel had finally gotten into a routine. Okay, only the kind of chaotic routine that the ED would allow. So how was it fair that, on the one day she had ever been late to work, the one person she just couldn't stop thinking about walked back into her life?

Summary
Mel picked up her phone, wondering if spam callers even worked this late at night.
“I’m getting a divorce,” Langdon said on the other end, without any kind of preamble, “Can I crash with you?”

Summary
“Are you not interested in dating?” Frank asked curiously. Mel could tell there wasn't judgement in his voice, just that he was trying to inquire.
“Um, it's more like it doesn't cross my mind. I actually did some research back in grad school about asexuality and I think I’m demisexual. Have you heard the term?” Mel responded.
“No, tell me more.”
__________Or Frank and Mel go on practice dates together to both gain more experience with dating (and cuteness ensues)
