Ralph’s hands were on his waist now. Laurie took a reluctant step back and appraised him.
“Something not quite to your satisfaction, dear?” There was a hint of apprehension in Ralph’s tone which Laurie, he hoped, soothed by placing a hand on Ralph’s cheek.
“I just thought you would have a bit more of a tan, that’s all,” he said with a small smile. He found the browned tips of Ralph’s ear most endearing. Ralph laughed, a throaty chuckle. “Sorry, Spud. Next time I’ll ask for more deck duty instead of being holed up in the radio room.”
“Yes, do.” Laurie leaned in to kiss him again.

The war goes on, Laurie goes to a party, welcomes Ralph back home for shore leave and settles some things. All in all, an eventful night.
