Phil looks into the eyes of the man he’s loved across so many years, in so many ways, and tries to find the words he wants to say. “I’m glad we have the relationship we have right now. And if the path we went down is the one we needed to go down to get here, I’m glad we did it. Even when there were bumps in the road.”
“Bumps?” Dan gives a little laugh. “F***ing boulders. Sinkholes. Stampedes of wildebeests.”
Phil smiles. “Fine. I’m just saying, I don't think everything would have been perfect if we’d been out as a couple the whole time. Yes, we would have been happy in some ways, but I’m sure we’d have other regrets. Other things we wish could have been different.”
OR
Dan and Phil reflect on what might have been different if they'd hard launched earlier in their relationship. Dan has regrets. Phil thinks Dan needs to forgive himself.

Phil pressed kisses along his neck, making his way up to edge of his chin. Dan felt a warm sensation bloom in his chest. Almost like his stomach were full of butterflies, threatening to spill out.
Dan giggled as Phil kissed all the freckles on his face. "Stop it!"
Phil pressed one last kiss into his skin before leaning back with a grin. "Happy birthday, Danny."
Dan chuckled, unable to contain the smile on his face. "Is that my birthday gift for today? Get rudely awakened from my sleep to a grown man trying to suffocate me with hugs?"
"You love it," cooed Phil.
Dan wakes up on his 35th birthday with Phil by his side, pressing kisses into his skin and wrapping him in his embrace. He thinks of how younger Dan would feel if he saw how far he had come after all these years, and reminisces on the moments throughout his life. For the first time in a while, Dan is perfectly content with getting older.

Phil doesn’t let the smile slip across his features yet. He turns away from the camera, nodding down at the pile of dishes and half-emptied ingredients just out of sight of the lens. “It’s a mess in here,” he says.
Dan purses his lips and nods. “As usual.” His voice is measured, too calm for the way his eyes are boring into Phil’s. He’s waiting, primed to act the moment Phil gives in to the cloying tension. But Phil knows Dan—he knows this play. He stays quiet, watching as the silence settles uncomfortably behind Dan’s eyes. “You wanna export?” he asks eventually, words slow, careful.
Phil shrugs, then nods back toward the mess. “You gonna clean?”
Dan blinks once, twice. “All by myself?” he asks, his tone verging on annoyed, but never making it past whiny.
Phil pouts as much as he’s able, with the way the side of his mouth is quirking up. “Aw, poor bunny.”
