His hair was down, falling almost to his calves and his robe was thin, barely more than a sleeping robe. Liu Qingge paused. He'd never seen Shen Qingqiu in less than three layers. Since Shen Qingqiu's qi deviation, he'd stopped dressing so fastidiously, no longer favoring high collars and sleeves that reached down to his fingers, but he still never walked around like this.
    There was something else strange, too. Something in the set of his shoulders, or the tilt of his head, like he'd walked a long way to get here and still could not rest. His gaze was distant. Not cold like Liu Qingge had suspected, but flat. There was no derision or joy there. There was nothing at all.

    It begins with Liu Qingge wandering the paths of a hosting sect's gardens, and finding Shen Qingqiu standing uncharacteristically close to one of their hosts. In fact, standing close is something of an inadequate description: Shen Jiu stands rigidly under a tree and their host's hand is stretched out so that his arm blocks Liu Qingge's view of their faces, holding onto a branch of that same tree. His sleeve drapes over Shen Qingqiu's shoulder, his head tilted forward to allow for quieter conversation.

    "All I ask is that you think about it," he tells Shen Qingqiu, so preposterously over-familiar that even Liu Qingge takes note. "Consider your priorities. We'll speak again soon."

    (It begins with attending a preliminary meeting for what could be a very promising inter-sect cooperation, and among their hosts seeing a man that Shen Qingqiu does not recognise, but Shen Jiu does.)

    “We have a problem.” Satoru announces, slamming into Suguru’s studio two days later. He feels guilty. Like so so guilty.

    “That so?” Suguru asks from his bed, lounging in a pair of sweats, his shirt hiked up. He scratches at his happy trail and glances over at Satoru. His demeanor changes instantly at whatever he sees on Satoru’s face. He swings his feet off his low bed, sitting up and leaning forward. “Satoru, what’s wrong?”

    Satoru situates himself on the bed next to Suguru, crossing his legs and sitting so they’re facing each other. He meets Suguru’s eyes and cannot speak. Totally blank brain. Suguru touches his knee gently, probably about to say something helpful and kind like take your time or whatever you need.

    For some reason, Satoru panics.

    “I can’t come.” He announces, much louder than he needs to. “Unless I’m thinking about you.”

    It’s kind of a surprise that he can rescue the protagonist so quickly, but he isn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. And Liu Qingge’s presence, however sticky, means that he can spar in this strong body any time he wants – life at Cang Qiong really is good!

    Meanwhile, if Shen Qingqiu had been more willing to discuss his past with the only person who was part of it, then perhaps it would not have taken him three full years to realize that his childhood friend is gone.
    When the only other option is living without Qi-ge, he devotes himself to hunting down his soul. Unfortunately, this is pretty difficult when the man wearing Yue Qingyuan’s face has ordered that he not leave the mountain.

    (It’s not really a surprise when he begins hallucinating Qi-ge.)

    But that wouldn’t be the case. Somehow, moments after his consciousness fades for the last time, he wakes up again.
    Now, Shen Qingqiu finds himself over ten years in the past, when Cang Qiong Mountain was still the top sect of the cultivation world, Yue Qingyuan was alive and well, and the Demon Emperor Luo Binghe was no more than a fourteen-year-old disciple of Qing Jing Peak.
    Shen Qingqiu has one goal— keep the past from repeating itself and make sure Yue Qingyuan doesn't meet the same fate.
    But he runs into a few problems with his plan: Luo Binghe is somehow impossible to kill, and no matter how he tries to push him away, Yue Qingyuan still refuses to leave Shen Qingqiu alone.

    So that’s how Ren becomes a Featherman Ranger.
