Summary
“Mayyyyyypicc,” Spoke croons, draping himself over his best friend’s lap like an expensive blanket. They’re laying in the shade of a shaking aspen, and when the wind blows cool and gentle over the field it rattles the leaves above them.
“Whaaaaaaaat,” replies Mapic, drawling out the inner vowel just as long. He takes one of the ribbons of Spoke’s rainbow headband in his hands and fiddles absently with it. Spoke watches the color flicker for a moment before he smiles.
“What do you know,” Spoke asks, sweetly. “About worship?”

The captive that King Parrot & Co. take from the battle of Merchant City is strangely insistent that he knows Flamefrags. Not that it matters, because Parrot doesn't really care about lying low-level soldiers. All he wants to know is when and where Cindercrest will attack next. All of Spoke's frantic energy came to a screeching halt. The words died on his tongue. His hands stopped their constant movement.
"Oh," he said quietly.
Mapicc's ears twitched at his voice, but he didn't look up. If anything, he curled tighter into himself, that whining sound getting quieter like he was trying to hide it. Trying to be small. Trying to disappear.
Spoke stood frozen in the doorway for a long moment, his mind suddenly racing in an entirely different direction. He'd been ready for chaos, for laughter, for causing problems on purpose. The void was still thrumming through him, eager and restless, begging him to move, to run, to flicker.
But Mapicc was crying.
