By the time he had gotten back home, his brother was asleep, curled up in his futon with the sheets tucked to his nose in a way Madara hadn’t seen since they were kids.
Even with his limited vision, Madara could trace the evidence of dried up tear tracks on Izuna’s cheeks. Face creasing in worry, the elder squatted by Izuna’s side, sweeping stray strands of hair out of his brother’s face.
In the dim moonlight filtering through the window, Izuna looked a lot younger than usual, his face not as sharp and eyebrows furrowed in the way they did when the younger was having a nightmare.
“Did the sky spook you that much?” He murmured, frowning as Izuna’s short hair slipped easily through his rough fingers. “Don’t worry, the elders and I will find out what this means for us. I swear nothing will befall you as I live.”
Izuna was his last living brother. He would like it to stay that way, even if he had to fight the heavens himself.
But for now, Izuna was back home and safe, and that was all he could ask for. Madara got up with a grunt, walking to the door and shutting it as quietly as he could.
“Rest well, brother.”
Sasuke didn’t sleep that night.
