Ilya knew for a fact that Irina Rozanova despised Western Christmas. Any time it came up, she would turn her nose up at the commercialism and manic cheer that she believed defiled the spirit of the holiday. “It is capitalist propaganda, sweetheart. Don’t fall for it for a second. Nothing in this world is so happy. It is a lie.” Still, she would make sure that her two sons had a few small gifts and chocolates when Rozhdestvo Khristovo came around, and Ilya always felt he had earned that small amount of sweetness at the start of a new year.
His whole life, he assumed there would not be enough of his mother in Western Christmas for him to find her there, which is perhaps part of why he avoided it so fiercely and for so long.
Now that he finally has what he’s always wanted, Ilya is embracing the Christmas spirit, but it isn’t quite what he expects it to be. Feat. Questionable Christmas movies & music, extreme holiday activities, and arguments about whether the apocalypse is worth surviving.

He expected laughter. Or the way Shane would roll his eyes even as he melted, the way that made all the teasing feel welcome.
Instead, Shane’s smile disappeared completely. Like a light switched off.
“Yeah,” Shane said, clearing his throat and forcing the word out before it could crack. “I guess so.”
He took a step back, anxious for space that felt suddenly necessary, like he might suffocate if he drifted any closer. Every instinct in him screamed to leave. To put distance between himself and this feeling and the source of it before it swallowed him whole.
