ZK: I'm not a victim. And I didn't go through anything. I willingly put myself in a situation that turned out pretty fucked up, that's all.
KD: I know it's easy to blame yourself, but—
ZK: I'm not blaming myself. It's just what it is. You reap what you sow, and all that shit.
KD: [SIGHS] There's no shame in admitting that your experience changed you.
ZK: It didn't change me. I've always had these… issues. And they're completely unrelated to that part of my life.
KD: So they didn't start after you were rescued?
ZK: Fuck, no. I've been this way for as long as I can remember."What," Carol breathes, hunkered down in her chair, shoulders locked in a slouch like she's some sort of lurking cave creature, eyes frantically darting back over the words she's just typed. "What are you talking about."
KD: Alright. So you've never…
ZK: Never had an orgasm.

Her publicist has the perfect solution to rebuild Carol's public image and free her from the "romance slop" genre forever, but Carol isn't going to like it.

Summary
Carol Sturka is the forty-seventh President of the United States, and the most convincing thing about her presidency might be her marriage to Julian Vane, which is warm and genuine and entirely platonic. Helen Umstead, who serves as her Press Secretary, is the woman who sees through all of it, and who Carol cannot stop noticing in ways that have absolutely nothing to do with press strategy. After a Republican senator starts questioning the true nature of the marriage and an emergency in the Arctic forces the administration into intense scrutiny, Carol or Helen learn that the White House contains no space more hazardous than any room that leaves the two of them alone.

“I want you as my graduate advisor.”
“What?” Carol’s hands fell from her bag. “You – what?”
Zosia smiled, teeth on display now. “I want you as my advisor next year. Like I said, I have been waiting for this class the entirety of my time here. I don't want anyone else claiming you before I do.”
So, Carol was fine. She was fine and the fact that she repeated that constantly, a mantra in her head, probably should have raised some red flags, but it didn't.
She published her books under her pen name, taught at the university, and did not let an unhinged graduate student blow up her life. Just for the fuck of it, it seemed like.

Summary
Unfortunately, Carol could only watch helplessly as the garment fell away from the woman's flawless skin. From her vantage point, Carol could see the woman's breast in outline – taut skin, pink nipples, and a devastating lack of a tanline.
The two books in her hand fell onto her towel with a double thump. The woman's eyes slowly met her own in amusement. Carol immediately glanced away in embarrassment – it was a miracle she didn't give herself whiplash.
Europeans and nude beaches shouldn't mix – or, at least, that was Carol Sturka's opinion before a literal Polish model got her claws into her sunburnt skin.

BEEEEEEEEEEP.
The honk comes without warning. For half a second, Carol thinks she has been shot.
Then it keeps going. A sustained, unbroken, eat-shit honk. The kind LA people deploy when they want to fuck you up as a person.
The honking stops. The Range Rover's window comes down.
"Are you leaving the space or not." The woman says it flat, and bored.
Carol puts her own window down. Slowly, for the fuck of it.
“No, lady. I'm not leaving. I’m parked. This is a parking space, and I have parked a car in it. Like a human being is allowed to. Your response to that was to put your hand flat on a horn for what, an hour? What the fuck is wrong with you?”

Summary
Two years after the Unjoining, she saw Zosia in London, of all places – nearly unrecognizable in her winter attire – bundled up to her nose. But Carol felt her presence like a sawed-off shotgun wound to her stomach. The sight of her eyes peeking over the edge of her scarf, sparkling with mirth as she shouldered the woman she was walking with –
Well, it was fucking devastating.

“Carol."
Zosia Bartoś has said Sturka on panel shows and she has said my colleague on Twitter and she has said "the anchor at Liberty" in interviews and she has said "Carol Sturka" the full two-word name in writing, but she has not said Carol, just Carol, since a hotel room in Cincinnati ten years ago.

Summary
Carol finds it in the third week of living alone with an unhived Zosia: a New York Times article, “To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This.” An intimacy experiment involving thirty-six increasingly personal questions and, at the end of it, four uninterrupted minutes of eye contact, which sounds fake and humiliating and somehow still not bad enough to stop her.
Carol, obviously, prints it out.

She didn’t bother to nod, just staring back blankly at him.
“However, we’d really prefer to make this experience more…smooth sailing?”
Carol snorted. “I think for such stormy weather, the fact that we’ve not capsized should be celebration enough.”
He raised an arrogant eyebrow.
“We’d rather disagree with your assessment, Ms Sturka. After the… disaster that was your US book tour, we’ve decided the best course of action would be a change of management perhaps?”

Summary
Carol misses those nights when she took silence and sleep for granted. It’s been two weeks since they have stopped, and the repercussions are starting to show in the sluggish way she moves about in the morning. In the headaches that remind her of the worst kind of hangover. And in the irritation she feels at the slightest inconvenience, or even at her lack of inspiration when she sits in front of a blank document on her computer.
Well, maybe that last part isn’t entirely someone else’s fault. But still, she should do something about the fucking noise.
[...]
“Well, then? Do you need something?”
Carol takes a deep breath. For the first time since moving in this awfully sleazy apartment complex, she’s about to be the wet blanket everybody hates – or maybe appreciates for the intervention, she hopes.
“Yeah,” she mutters and points to the door. “Could you turn it down? I – I’m trying to get some sleep.”
The other seems to ponder her request for a second before shrugging. “It’s not that loud.”or
a new tenant moves in the upstairs apartment. She's loud, careless, annoying. And hot. And Carol has a hard time dealing with that.
