At each round of harsh criticism—or moreso snobby commentary—Dazai would cross out another name on the paper in front of him.
He seems pretty… judgemental. So each time another word sprouts from his mouth, another sensation of dread gets thrown straight across my face.
I’m a nobody. I have no friends, no family, and no sense of direction. And he already chose someone like me over any of those successful people… It’s either there’s something really, really wrong with Dazai-san or he has the wrong idea of me. And I’m not really sure which is better.
As the crowd started to clamor again, the host cleared their throat to gather our attention.
“Moving on to the final category, Best Short Film is awarded to…” There was a long, dragged-out pause in the sake of building suspense. But, honestly, for me, there wouldn’t be much of a difference between who won any of these prizes. I have no clue who any of these people are or what they’ve done.
“Rashōmon by Akutagawa Ryuunosuke."

Atsushi let his eyes drift over to the young woman standing still as stone next to the exasperated editor. She shook her head gently. He should say no then, Kyouka was always looking out for his best interest. But then his gaze was pulled again to that book, and those drawings. His heart started to beat rapidly and a little flicker of want started to lick at the back of his throat. He’s never let himself want anything before. The consequences of ever letting that flicker turn into a flame chilled him to the bone. He stared at the book one more time, running the pad of his thumb over the remaining gold embossing of the name Chokodo Shujin.

Atsushi, the newest staff member at ABA Magazine, is roped into a potentially perilous assignment that involves a certain cantankerous artist hiding on the Big Island. Tasked by his wryly mentor Dazai to complete a full compendium on tropical flora, he is sent to Hawaii to try and coax the infamous Chokodo Shujin into providing the artwork. Will his earnest charm be enough to melt the recluse's icy disposition or will this prickly partnership end in chaos?

Summary
People often say you never know the value of what you have until you lose it. What makes it worse is, often time we do know the value, consciously or subconsciously, but we take it for granted, thinking it will always be guaranteed to us, day after day.
This is a lesson almost everyone learns, and some learn it more than once, and Atsushi would never forget the first time he learned it
While on a mission with Akutagawa, in the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of something he could barely see, but never forget.

Summary
Joining the ADA was the best thing to happen to Atsushi Nakajima but the last three years have put the weretiger through the wringer. He loves the work he does, or at least the part where the city is saved and there’s momentary peace. But it’s become a thankless job that leaves him too tired for a proper dating life.
Maybe he’d be less jaded if he didn’t have to pick up the slack for omegas when they drop everything for heat-related paid time off. It may not be their fault, but why does being a beta have to mean more work?
And on top of that, his rival-turned-mission partner is an alpha who keeps him at a cold distance due to their social dynamic. Atsushi often wonders if it’ll always be this strained between them.
When Atsushi feels at his lowest, a fantasy catches him off guard. One where he gets to call out of work for suddenly presenting as an omega in heat — could Atsushi’s annoyance towards omegas actually be jealousy?

Dazai’s day started like any other one. He woke up, got dressed, ate shitty takeout from yesterday's dinner and arrived at work at a reasonable time of exactly 1 hour 9 minutes late. Pushing the door open with a slam he entered the ADA, but instead of Kunkida’s grating voice reaching his ears… the office was quiet.
Not peaceful quiet, or early morning quiet, but wrong quiet.
Looking around, everyone was there. Tanizaki and Naomi were whispering together in a corner too quiet even for him to catch. Kunikida was pacing anxiously, Ranpo was sitting on his desk seemingly deep in thought next to Yosano whose expression was unreadable. Even Kenji wasn’t smiling, sitting on the couch with Kyoka, his hat clutched in his lap.
OR: Atsushi and Akutagawa from the BEAST universe are sent to the original universe through ability shenanigans.

Akutagawa Ryuunosuke was an artist by heart.
He was smart, not to be too happy, because he knows something like that could be ripped away from him in a heartbeat.
But, he always took immense joy in his paintings. Every detail, every brush, every calculating move of his hand brought him peace in the chaos of his mind.

Or, Akutagawa's ability is not Rashomon, and is instead Hells screen, the ability to paint anything into life, as long as he has some type of relationship with the person he is painting. Akutagawa has to live life with an ability that seems useless in the eyes of the uneducated, but is far more useful then most think.
Fanfic is inspired by the in real life Author's book, Hell's Screen.

…Atsushi was suddenly very aware of the sweat beading on the back of his neck. He had absolutely no clue what to do, so trying his best to be polite, he reached out a shaky hand. You know, for a handshake. That was courteous, right? “Akutagawa? It’s– it’s nice to meet you.” He tried for a smile.
Akutagawa took one look at Atsushi’s outstretched hand, looked back to Atsushi’s face, and scoffed. “I have zero intention of playing house with you, mongrel. Get your hand out of my face.” And he turned around and he sat back down in his chair.
Oh. Okay. Cool. Awesome. That was fine. Atsushi felt something inside him shrivel up and die and fall to the floor, shattering into one million little tiny pieces. “Yeah, okay, sure,” He said, weakly, before retracting his hand as requested, and turning around to power walk out of the room.
...And so began the longest eight weeks of Atsushi’s life.
In order to escape prospects of potential homelessness, college student Nakajima Atsushi is set up with an apartment and roommate courtesy of Dazai Osamu.
Atsushi’s roommate turns out to be the worst person he’s ever met in his entire life.

“I don’t need anyone, weretiger. Least of all …” He raised his head to bark at him some more and very clearly realized that he was way closer to Atsushi’s face than he thought, his eyes widening at the sight. “… you.”
His breath tickled Atsushi’s skin and the detective made another mental note how it didn’t really bother him at all. He smelled of liquor, but it wasn’t that off-putting.
“Yeah, okay. Want to sit down for a minute?”
[Set after saving the world from Amenogozen. Atsushi has trouble falling asleep; he goes out in the middle of the night to look for some snacks, and crashes into a drunk Akutagawa. They talk, they bond. Followed by tooth-rotting fluff (you’ve been warned).]
