Summary
After Jax's abstraction, Pomni can feel the void his absence has left. No one wants to acknowledge it, but it's there and real. On top of that, the members of the circus have to grasp with the truth of their own existence: they are completely trapped. Caine tries to cheer them up, but some things are too great for the AI to properly grasp.
Unaware of her jester counterpart, Abigail Brooks wanders through her mundane life in St. Louis. Every day feels the same working her corporate job, even if she tries to escape through exploration. Her friendships both in and out of the circus suffer as she attempts to navigate worlds she is not equipped to handle. Jax, or Felix, becomes her life preserver. But will clinging to him only drown them both?

“See something you like?” Felix says. Red and blue light washes across his face, intermingling, and for an instant, she sees the man he was in the circus, overlaid on the man he is now.
“Maybe I do,” she says softly, looking up at his broad, easy smile.
“Maybe we should do something about that,” he says, turning to face her. He leans down, and she half expects him to pull away, to say how gullible she is for believing he would do something like this. But then: for the space of three heartbeats, his lips find hers.
When Felix kisses Christine on New Year’s, she tells herself it doesn’t mean anything. Then she kisses him back a week later, and suddenly their relationship as roommates gets a lot more fun…and more complicated.

Summary
Sometimes, on the rare nights they spend in bed together, Pomni will sit up by her side, and watch her sleep.
Usually she situates herself lower down the bed, like she wants to be small. She'll throw her arm over Pomni's waist and tuck the scarred side of her face against her side, right above her hip. She'll always start out sleeping restlessly, but her face will even out in dreaming.
Pomni will often reach out, to cup the back of her head with her hand, run her fingers through her hair, and stare at her peaceful, unguarded expression — and she'll think, selfishly, just to herself, I wish I knew your name.
(or: jax coming back from abstraction doesn't automatically fix everything. pomni struggles to reckon with it.)

Summary
It's been weeks since Jax abstracted. He's been confined to the big purple tent, devoid of any light, because darkness keeps him calm. The others visit when they can stand to, though it’s not often. Pomni visits every night.
She tells herself it's just to check on him, that they were friends, and friends do that sort of thing. But then she starts talking to Jax, or whatever is left of him, about everything and nothing all at once, and somewhere along the way she starts to notice things she can't explain. The way the creature goes still when she speaks. The way it tilts, almost imperceptibly, toward her voice.
He's abstracted, and this shouldn't be possible, she thinks. That is, until Pomni begins to do her research and understand what abstraction really means- what it takes from a person, and more importantly, what it leaves behind. She has a theory, and the window to act on it is closing fast.
