I don’t really know who I am. I do know that James Buchanan Barnes is dead. He’s a pile of bones at the bottom of a ravine. He’s a side bar in some other guy’s museum exhibit that might not even exist anymore. James Barnes would puke if he could see what he became. His parents and sister and friends would cry.
I don’t know what’s left over now, but I know it’s not good. And I don’t think it can ever be good.

I never dared to wish it into life, because I knew it would only bring me pain. And I was done with longing for the dead people and the dead world behind me.
This is a different kind of pain from the one in my shoulder now, as the skin frays around the place where it meets metal. It’s a pain of my reality crashing into this, into Steve Rogers. Alive. Drifting back into my life as I begin to drift out of it.

i can't believe fanfiction is real.
this version of bucky is so wonderful to me. here is a man who has more or less made peace with his past and fought his way into leaving a better mark on the world with his work, with his friendships. he was doing good for himself. and then steve came out of the ice.
i don't know that bucky really started living until he started dying. and getting to see him fall in love with steve, his walls coming down as he accepts the end of his life... it was gorgeous. it was painful. it felt so real, but i was so happy for both of them, even in the end. because despite it all, they still found each other again.

oh, steve.
it's amazing to see how much is happening in this fic when... nothing really is? it's a roadtrip to nowhere. lots of downtime, lots of meandering thoughts, lots of food (which i loved). but it's not really about the places so much as it is about our characters (though the places do add interesting backdrops to what's happening in the minds of our characters).
i really loved this. bucky and steve, just trying to find peace in the aftermath of everything that is their lives.
