    Summary

"Just hit me," Kevin repeated, a breathless quality in his voice that he had to visibly fight to manage back. "Can we just get to that part? However, whatever you need, whatever gets it out." Jean just blinks at him. There was so much there to pick apart, with Kevin watching him like he had watched anyone in the Nest who mattered in some way or another when the cameras weren't looking. That small and watchful, it had been easy to miscategorize as calculating. Vigilant, Jean saw now. Afraid. His mind kept coming back to *can we just get to that part.* Kevin had been staying with Jean and Jeremy for a week now, had found genuine comfort in Jeremy and an easier sense of co-existence with Jean. Had Kevin been waiting for him to turn on him the whole time?

    ---

Violence has always been the price of affection in the Nest. Jean knows better now. Kevin didn't get the memo.

    Day 1: Gunshot

Kevin hits the ground, landing hard on his knees as he doubled over. God, fuck he could feel it now. The epicenter of the pain was his lower gut, a spot that was more scar tissue than skin, which might explain part of the delay. There was a smaller pain in his side, but he can't do much thinking past the pain in his stomach, and what Riko had once told him about how he read that a stomach injury hurts as bad as it does because the stomach acid starts eating at the edges of the wound. And then he had of course put a knife in Kevin's gut to test it.
