    The manor was alive. Loud in a way that Tim didn’t know what to do with. Life was evident there in every corner. The kitchen was usually in a state of use. The garden had trodden paths where Alfred liked to walk. Every worn bit of carpet and every reverberating footstep was a testament of life.
    And it made Tim bite his lip and twist his fingers together while he sat alone in his room.

    Tim was doing just fine on his own. He fell into a routine between school, extracurriculars, and his nightly Batstalking. Maybe his situation was unconventional, but he could take care of himself.

    Tim may have been thirteen, but he was also a high school Sophomore and perfectly capable of faking a nanny, breaking and entering, and hacking the Batcomputer—not necessarily in that order.

    All he had to do to keep this lifestyle was maintain the ruse—easy enough when it came to his parents but a more treacherous undertaking to try to put one over on the Batman himself. And with Jason as his English tutor, Tim found himself growing perilously close to the Wayne family. Although at first content to watch them from behind his camera, it was only a matter of time before he got invested.

    Bruce paused for a moment, considering his words carefully. “I think you’re ready to start patrolling on your own. How would you feel about that?”

    Tim tried to ignore the sinking feeling in his chest. Something was very wrong. “I dunno. Being Robin is pretty great.”

    “Well… I was thinking of giving the title of Robin to Damian.”

    Just like that, Tim’s fragile world came crashing down around him.

    Or: All Tim has ever wanted is to be a part of the Wayne Family. Instead, Tim is replaced as Robin. As he tries to navigate his difficult new life and earn back the affection of the Bats, he finds himself going toe to toe with the Riddler. With all of Gotham on the line, failure isn't an option, and Tim is determined to do it all on his own. Meanwhile, the Bats wish he would just come to them for help.

Perhaps now his only chance to get back what was stolen from him that day is to go back under and get the scars constricting his chest removed. If only that would also remove the scars a little deeper in his soul. It all feels overwhelming-surgery, the DA's request, and Bruce... Bruce invited him for Christmas.
