She tries to use the position to improve things for everyone in the Circus, but Caine isn't allowed to give them everything they want. In the course of getting to know him better, she might have found a way to bypass those restrictions. But it could be dangerous when he's mentally unstable and becoming more obsessed with her by the day.

One morning she wakes up to find a small offering left outside her home. She catches only a glimpse of alabaster and obsidian before the creature dives into the murky depths of the deep sea. On the edge of the drop-off, Rey is left with a choice: Stay in the light or follow into the dark.

Rey shook her head, her gaze maintaining its earnest quality. “I think you are just what Sleepy Hollow needs.” She placed her hand on his bicep once more, the movement unleashing a new flood of desire inside him. “You are just what I need,” she added, her voice a soothing murmur to his ears. “I told you before, Ben. We are meant to help each other. I’ve dreamt it.”
Straightening his back, Ben attempted to maintain his composure. He berated himself with the reminder that he came to Sleepy Hollow to investigate, not to succumb to a seduction by the most beguiling woman he had ever met. “Dreams do not subscribe to logic. All investigations are based on deductive reasoning.”
Rey shook her head again, the candlelight shining on her brown curls like a golden crown. “Not this one,” she whispered, withdrawing her hand in an evident sign of departure. “I assure you, Ben, this investigation will be quite different.”

The appropriate answer was "a waitress", or "a stranger," or even "a crazy, perpetually single woman who’s been hopelessly, inexplicably in love with your comatose son for weeks."
Behind her, the nurse huffed, cocking her hip. As if it was obvious, she said, “She’s his fiancée.”
