"How long has he been on the fucking Raiders? One season? Two? Because I can work with that, I think. So long as he didn't want to be traded to those bastards-"
"They drafted him."
Hayden felt a little sick, because there wasn't many players who hadn't been traded since their draft. On the Metros, Shane was the only one. There was a similarly low number for the Raiders. "Shane," he said, trying to remain calm. "Besides the rookies, there is only three players I can think of that have been with Boston their entire careers. And those options are all going to give me a heart attack, but buddy. Please, please don't tell me Boston Lily is Ilya fucking Rozanov."
But there was a part of Hayden that already knew. Like a weird sixth sense or some psychic bullshit. But he was desperately hoping he was wrong, because if Shane fucking Hollander was dating who Hayden thought he was...he didn't know what he'd do. Flip the coffee table, maybe, if his daughter wasn't sleeping peacefully in the corner. Maybe grab a couch cushion to muffle his screams.

Summary
“Am I a bad friend?”
Hayden has always been the guy Shane joked with, the guy he trusted to feed him without mocking him, the guy he roomed with on the road, and Shane is the only man who has ever seen Hayden cry, and Hayden loves Shane. He fucking loves him. They are like brothers, and they have been for almost ten fucking years. He’s always been Shane’s guy, Shane’s best friend.
Except all along, maybe that wasn’t true. Ilya Rozanov, apparently, had been the guy. Before Hayden had ever met Shane, Ilya Rozanov had been there. And Hayden had never even noticed.
Shane is all over every inch of Hayden’s life. Hayden thought that was reciprocal.

Hayden had always thought of it as one of the things they had gone through together, something that had bonded them early on, when he had been the one to linger in the locker room and had slung one of Shane’s arms over his shoulders and dragged him out to his car, carrying his weight.
He’d thought of it as something they had gone through together, but in retrospect, it’s so fucking obvious how alone Shane was.
Alone, on the ice. Singled out.
Hayden, on the bench, not realizing how bad things were, even when the evidence was right in front of him, not speaking up until it was too late.
He opens his mouth, trying to find the words. The laughter in the dressing room swells. They are surrounded by their teammates, and Hayden is a part of the huddle. What would he even say?
Hayden shuts his jaw with a click.
Shane looks away.

Ilya thinks back to his first night at the cottage. They'd traded kisses in the dark until Ilya felt the anxiety overwhelm him and finally said Are you sure this is what you want? I know I am hard to love
It's not hard, Shane said, his expression unwavering, Loving you is so easy I've been doing it since I was 17 years old.
Ilya will keep those words in his heart forever, right next to his mama.

Summary
They do not talk about what they’re doing. To acknowledge the ground beneath their feet would be to crash and burn immediately, or so Ilya assumed. Like stupid coyote cartoon running off a cliff; it’s fine, until he looks down.
But tonight Shane sits on the edge of his bed and sets his jaw and asks, “It’s not just me, right?”
Shane, apparently, just noticed gravity.
[Or: a missing scene from Episode 5, in which Ilya is Totally Fine, obviously, and they have sex about it.]

Bookmarker's Notes
The problem – one of many problems – is that Ilya and Shane work together like they have always been a team. It doesn’t even feel like work to play hockey with him; it feels like wings. They are faster than anybody else on the ice, better, fucking unstoppable, and Ilya is soaring on the adrenaline of it.
When Shane scores, Ilya kisses the side of his helmet, and Shane lets him. It’s a dizzying new high. Ilya can’t even see the ground below his feet.
[...]
How the fuck did he let this happen? Should’ve pushed harder. Stupid. Never should’ve let it get this far. He should push Shane away now, but he can’t seem to make himself. Not today. Not again. He’s not brave, and it’s too late for all that. Can’t put the – what’s the saying? Can’t put the cat back in the box? Bird back in the cage? Can’t escape gravity once you’re back in the atmosphere. Can’t un-cry your tears.

Summary
On a Thursday, a video of Canadian star hockey player Shane Hollander goes viral on the internet. The video was taken on the previous Sunday, and it’s not what anybody expects. It’s not a sex tape, or a drunken fight in a bar, or any of the other videos that have been captured of others in the league, but instead, it seems to be a sneakily filmed video of Hollander confronting his former teammates.

Bookmarker's Notes
The radio turns down to play quietly, background noise, and Ilya glances at the rearview mirror. Hayden is looking at the road, and after a moment he meets Ilya’s eyes. He looks sad. They look at each other for a few moments, Ilya’s view of his eyes shifting as he and Shane rock back and forth as much as they can with the restriction of their seatbelts, and it’s like they’re communicating something that Ilya isn’t really sure about. And he thinks briefly, as Hayden is looking back and road, that he kind of loves him, this fucking guy that loves Shane so much that he’ll break his fucking heart so he knows what kind of people he’s around, so much that he’ll go with him to confront his own teammates— the teammates that he’ll have to keep seeing because he’s not trading— and so much that he’ll tolerate the sounds of sex just behind while he drives aimlessly.
He’s kind of great.
