Summary
Lord Capon is ten, and sulking. He's dressed in fine clothing and is scrubbed clean, plump and shining like a newly minted coin. But he has a haughty little turn to his head and a lazy, cruel look in his bright blue eyes. They’re the eyes of a boy who has never been hungry and who is often bored.
Henry is still raw with grief from the death of his parents, and it makes him flinching and spiteful. He takes one look at Capon and wants to claw those blue eyes out.

If you think it’s been a good while since you’ve last cried that you’re unsure if you even still can, then this is the perfect fic to test out the ol’ tear ducts. I’d like to say that this caught me at an already-vulnerable time, but it really is just that rip-your-heart-out-of-your-chest, gut-wrenchingly sad. My cardigan is now covered in snot. Whyyy does it feel as if someone precious actually died, and I’m left viscerally reeling from the harrowing stasis of not only a lifetime of loss, but of a lifetime no longer shared. (; — ;) I can not read this again, lmaoo.

Arthur closed his eyes, expression riddled with irritation before turning to look at Merlin expectantly.
"Know what?"
“The mare I use. You know I call her Daisy? I never told you that." Merlin explained. Arthur stared for a few moments. He could see the flicker of emotions pass easily over him. Anger, annoyance, exasperation, indignance, and finally acceptance...AKA the Five Stages of Grief (Pendragon Edition).
"You talk to the horse.” He pointed out. Merlin narrowed his eyes.
“I whisper to the horse."
"...am I supposed to not hear it?” Arthur asked. Merlin wondered how likely it would be that he also heard him whispering magical spells if he heard him murmuring to the bloody horse. “Also, only you would choose such a ridiculous name.” He muttered. Merlin swallowed. This wasn't a problem at all, right? Right.

Arthur is being tested.A sorcerer makes a few dozen copies of Merlin.
Sorcerer: if you're really that good of a king, then you'll figure out who the real one is.
Arthur thinks it's easy. But all of these Merlin's seem to have a quirk of Merlin's intensified. It makes things difficult, because Merlin has days when he acts exactly like that.
Only one thing he knows for sure. It's definitely not the one who just defeated one of the other Merlin's with magic.

To make matters worse, Arthur’s idiot manservant clearly has a massive crush on the guy: despite him being a grumpy, straggly, cave-dwelling sorcerer, who makes terrible cabbage pottage, Merlin hasn’t taken his eyes off him! Arthur will tolerate this nonsense for a couple of days, but only because he must save Camelot.
