“It was the third hiker at that same stretch of trail in two weeks! You would think—” Tommy freezes as Evan’s scent floods his nose, a switch flicking as the recognition hits.
“Tommy?”
He sets the wooden spoon down next to the stove and turns in Evan’s arms, guiding them away from the stove. He ignores the concern from his boyfriend, instead gently grabbing and tilting his chin to the side and breathing in deep and almost clinical.
The slight scent of milk was still there.
He steps back and meets Evan’s eyes.
“I think you need to take a pregnancy test.”

And Tommy was walking away and the disbelief, the pain, the panic was rushing in as if it was that night at the loft all over again and something in Buck snapped.
He scrambled after Tommy, breath catching as he rounded the corner to the entryway as Tommy was reaching for the front door.
“I fought it too!” The words burst from him, falling loose from where they’d stuck the night before.
Tommy’s steps faltered, his hand freezing where he was reaching for the door handle.
“I fought the urge to call you so many times, Tommy. Almost everyday.”
Tommy’s hand fell to his side.
“Every time that I wanted to reach out, to text or call you, I baked. And I baked. And then I baked some more. I baked so much my fridge and freezer couldn’t hold it so I gave it away to everyone.”

Evan Buckley never knew who Daniel Buckley was. To Evan, Daniel was a headstone in a cemetery. He was a ghost who shared a name with Buck and never had any flowers or visitors. Not until Evan found him and decided they were family.
Evan became Buck became 'Toy Story' became Evan Buckley-Diaz. And through all of it, he wrote post-cards to a headstone in a cemetery in Hershey, Pennsylvania, making sure to keep the forever (almost) nine year old as part of his life.
So when Buck gets out of the Army, when he's healed as much as he can be, he has an idea. Buck couldn't be the only one in the military who never had family to talk to while he served. Making a non-profit to connect other veterans felt like the most reasonable decision.

“I knew a guy.” Buck sighed.
