"In the next life," Mydei says, and Phainon swallows. The next life, because there is nothing for them here. Maybe in the next life, Chrysos Heirs and heroes won't matter. No need for the deliverer Phainon longs to be. Will there be a next life? Even if someone knows, it won't be Phainon. He isn't involved in the affairs of the Chrysos Heirs. "Promise me you'll come see me again. My library is always open to you."
"Of course," Phainon says. He can't help but laugh at how silly all of this is. "I could never miss out on seeing a real Kremnoan dictionary."
Mydei sighs, but he is smiling. "Make fun of me as much as you want. As long as you stay right here in Okhema where we can keep you safe."
Phainon nods, thinking of Cyrene's dreams, the card labeled "Deliverer," and the wooden sword he's brought from home. It's a silly dream, one ruined by the moment Phainon realized his blood runs red.

“You want me to stay with you,” Aventurine said slowly. God, Ratio probably thought he was a complete idiot right now. Then again, was that really any different from before?
Ratio nodded. “Yes,” he said.
“... Why?”
“Because you can’t take care of yourself,” Ratio said. “And I have enough time on my hands to endeavor to do so.”
“You want to teach me how to take care of myself?” Aventurine said. He was starting to sound like a parrot. Ratio gave him an empty stare.
“That is, in fact, what I said,” Ratio sighed, exasperated. Had Aventurine annoyed him? Whatever, that didn’t matter. If he had, then that was better: Ratio would finally leave him alone.
“Are you sure?” Aventurine asked.
Ratio’s face was slightly pink. Was it hot in here? “Yes, gambler, I am sure. How many times do I have to repeat myself?!”
“No more,” Aventurine said hurriedly, holding up his hands placatingly. “I understand now. Well, I don’t understand why, but I understand that you’re serious. Confusingly.”

“You have hanahaki?” Ratio asked slowly. Aventurine nodded feebly. “... I am sorry.”
“It’s fine,” Aventurine lied. He felt tears well up in his eyes. Of course Ratio would never say “I love you too.” Not even when Aventurine was dying because of his love for him.
“If there is anything I can do to help—”
“There isn’t,” Aventurine said. His voice cracked. He sat up, suddenly uncomfortable with being so close to Ratio. He swallowed back tears. Aventurine did not cry. Aventurine was just another cog in the workings of the IPC, and tools did not cry. Kakavasha cried. Kakavasha was dead.
“I wish there was,” Ratio said. Aventurine scoffed. Ratio didn’t even care the slightest bit about him, and here he was, saying he wished he could help Aventurine? How ridiculous.
“You don’t get it,” Aventurine said. Against his will, tears started to pool in his eyes. “You don’t get it!
“I—”
“No one loves me,” Aventurine sobbed. “No one loves me, and they never will!”

Summary
Aventurine opened the vial, and Veritas watched him closely as he took a sip, hand reaching out too late to stop him. They both waited with anticipation. Veritas’ eyes widened, frozen in place.
“I don’t feel any different,” Aventurine said.
“Perhaps it takes a bit to activate, dearest gambl—”
Aventurine disappeared into a burst of white smoke, and Veritas blinked in alarm.
“Gambler? Are you alright?”
There was a tiny cough, and then another, and then another. Veritas watched in awe as the smoke cleared and a tiny figure with blonde hair and Aventurine’s eyes became visible. The tiny Aventurine’s clothes were far too big for his figure, and the shirt and coat went down to his knees, the collar hanging off his shoulders.
“Gambler? Is that you?”

loved the merry, homely feel to this. qifrey’s nervousness and hesitance to relax was a nice contrast and says a lot about him as a character, and the difference between qifrey’s feelings and the environment really emphasizes his loneliness.
olruggio and qifrey :((( poor olly, he has no idea. i can see why he’s upset. he is so kind, but he has to get fed up at some point too, even if he pretends he’s over it a week later. he is endlessly accommodating of qifrey, but qifrey is asking a lot of him (even though, of course, qifrey is forced into this situation). it’s so sad watching them like this and knowing that until things change, nothing can be done about it :(
loved the cultural elements, i always appreciate learning through fanfiction!!! that too emphasized qifrey’s loneliness sadly—even if he is familiar with some cultural traditions, he didn’t grow up with many (as far as he can remember) bc of living in the great hall. the girls adapt so quickly, but qifrey struggles…ohhh qifrey…oh olly :( -
