“Oh!” He laughed, letting go of her and stepping back to look at her, his cheeks red. He rubbed the back of his neck and El slipped her fingers against his cheek, poking at his skin. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay. Thank you.” She said, grinning at him. “For making my dreams come true.”
“El.” He laughed, blushing a deeper shade of red. “You’re so – cheesy.”
    “Cliché?”
“Yeah, cliché. Where’d you hear that one?” He asked, and El took a step toward him.
“Nancy told me we act cliché a lot of the time.”
“She’s right. So – you liked that one?”
“Much better than the first!” El replied, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to his lips. “More?”
“More--?” Mike asked, dazed for a moment before asking, “Oh, more music?”
“Yeah!” She smiled, slipping the headphones from around her neck and handing the Walkman to him. “Pick another.”
“Oh, alright.” Mike said, taking the Walkman back over to the crate. “Then you can pick one for me.”
“I don’t know what they sound like.” El said, shifting on her feet.
“That’s okay.” Mike said, glancing up at her; he added, “I’d love whatever you pick.”

“You won’t.” Lucas said, running his fingers through her hair. She reached a hand up to wipe her last few tears away. She reset (almost robotically, like she’d mastered the art of looking like nothing had happened at all – which made Lucas’ heart twist and knot in a way it never had) and sat with her back pressed, straight, against the wall behind her.
She leaned her head back and cast her eyes up to the ceiling. “I’m sorry.” She said, swallowing the lump in her throat and turning her eyes toward him after a moment.
“Crying is normal.” Lucas replied, reaching his hand toward hers. She let him hold it for a minute before pulling away, stuffing her hands between her knees and holding them tightly there. “Max, you’ve been through a lot. It’s okay to cry.”
    “I never cry.”
“That’s true. And it’s weird.” Lucas pointed out. Max turned toward him, frowning. “Why?”
“I look stupid when I cry.” She said, biting down hard on the inside of her cheek. “Like a baby.”
“You look fine.” Lucas said, and Max relaxed slightly. “You look like anyone else does when they cry.”
    “And how’s that?”
    “Ugly.”
Max laughed, then bit down on her lip to keep from laughing too loud. His parents were still up; and his bedroom door was locked, yeah, but it’d be kind of hard to get her out the window before they demanded to come inside.
And if they found out he’d snuck a girl into his room?
    Oh, man.
“Thanks for letting me come over.” She said, sniffing and sighing. “I had a friend back in California – her name was Katie – and she would let me come over when other bad shit happened. We would watch MTV and like, paint our nails and eat junk food.”
“We can’t watch MTV or paint our nails or eat junk food.” Lucas said, nodding toward the Death Star, “But we can work on that.”
    “What, your stupid space ship?”
“The Death Star.” Lucas said, rolling his eyes at her. “Only the baddest space ship ever made. The scariest, the biggest, the most evil. It’s right up your alley.”
    “You callin’ me evil?”
    “I’m callin’ you bad.”
“Oh, shut up.” Max whispered, blushing as she leaned forward to reach for the instruction book. “Alright. Fine. But I’ll leave at ten.”
“You can stay as long as you want.” Lucas said, reaching for the bucket of pieces. “It’s not like we have school tomorrow or anything.”
“Thank god for winter break.” Max sighed, taking a piece out of the bucket. “Too bad its almost over.”
“But my parents did throw a great New Years’ party, huh?” Lucas said, glancing over at her. “You had fun?”
“Eh.” Max said, shrugging and pressing a piece into the top of the Death Star. “It was okay.”
“Okay?” Lucas asked, leaning toward her, “Just okay?”
“The kiss wasn’t bad. Six out of ten.”
    “A six!”
    “You’ve done better.”
    “We’ve kissed twice!”
“Right! So – technically the Snow Ball was the best, and New Years was the worst.” Max said, shrugging and reaching for another piece. “That’s just how rankings work.”
Lucas leaned forward and kissed her.
After a moment, Max pulled away and shook her head, rolling her eyes.
“Any better?” Lucas asked. Max grinned.
“Well, you got a new worst.”
    “Oh, come on!”

“He made a choice to keep looking for Will, a choice to protect El, a choice to wait for her for 353 days. All of the choices he’d made, and he doesn’t regret any of them.
He wants to be angry at that; at the fact that she considers anything other than coming home to him as a better choice, but he thinks about his sister and he replies: “Yeah. I get that. She was –”
“My sister. Not my blood, like Nancy or Jonathan and Will, but – my sister. And I left her. She said this thing, and sometimes in my dreams it rings over and over again – she said it felt like she had had a piece of her missing for so long, and that I – I completed her.” El said, squeezing Mike’s hand tightly, “And I think about that and how it – was it selfish of me? To leave her, then? It was like I was ripping a piece of her away –”
“El, it’s selfish of her to expect you to stay.” Mike said, frowning at her, “She shouldn’t have expected you to leave a town and people you knew –”
    “People I loved –”
“Right, just for a girl you can remember but someone you don’t know.” Mike said, “You know me. You know Hop, you know Joyce, Lucas, Dustin – we’re as much your family as Kali.”
“But without the – the emotional baggage. Without the same experiences, the same pain. Because no matter what happens, no matter what you go through, you’ll never know.” El said, quickly adding, “I don’t want you to know. I’d rather die than you feel that –”
    “El.”
    “But it’s not the same.”
Mike pressed his hand against her cheek; she was freezing. He thought about the fact that they could have grabbed gloves, scarves – anything. They didn’t. “We’re stupid for being out here.”
“It feels better.” She said, pulling her face away from his touch. “I feel better in the cold.”
“Good.” Mike said, dropping his hand down to hers. “I’m sorry I don’t know – what you’ve been through. I know but I can’t know, and I know that Kali knowing makes her feel closer to you. But how well did you really know her –”
“Well enough to be able to find her.” El said, staring at him. “And I think about Mama –”
    “El.”
“And Papa. And how I was robbed of this like – fucking normal life.” El whispered, and suddenly she’s crying again and muttering curses under her breath, wiping the tears away. “And I feel like everyone is going to leave me because I’m too much to deal with –”
    “El – no. Never.”
“And I’m this big fucking hassle because I’m – I’m a secret person. I shouldn’t even really be alive after everything they did to me and everything I had to do and –”
    “El.”
“I don’t want you to leave me.” El whispered, and she heaves and shudders as she sobs, leaning forward to collapse against him. “I don’t want you to go because I’m not normal and I’m too much –”
“Never.” Mike whispered, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her to him. “El, I would never, ever even fucking think about that. I have never considered that.”
“You always have the choice.” She mumbled against his sweatshirt. He shakes his head and runs a hand through her hair.
“I would never give myself that choice.” He replied, “I would never want that.”
    “I’m sorry –”
“Don’t be. El, if I had a choice between you and – and everyone else in the world, it would be you. I would pick you every time, over and over and over again. There would never be a time when I wouldn’t pick you.” Mike said, pulling away from her to look at her face. El moved a hand to his cheek. She sniffed and wiped away her tears, taking a deep breath and turning away. “If I had to make that choice, I would always pick you.”
    “You don’t mean that –”
“How can you say that?” Mike asked, rubbing his hands together. “After everything we’ve been through together. After everything we’ve seen – how could you ever think I’d want to be with anyone but you? You know – you may have gone through some really bad shit with Kali. But El – we’ve been through some shit, too. And you’re right. Going through horrible things together does make you closer to someone. It’s true for you and Kali. It’s true for me and you.” Mike said, reaching for her. El let him wrap an arm around her. She pressed her head against his shoulder and let out a shuddering sigh; her breath escaped her mouth in a fog.
    “I’m just scared.” El mumbled.
“That’s okay. It’s okay to be scared.” Mike said, rubbing her arm. “I’m scared, too.”
    “Of?”
“Losing you. Every day. It plays over and over in my mind like a broken record – I wouldn’t make it if you were gone again. I wouldn’t make it. I think I would die.” Mike laughed, though it really wasn’t even a joke. “I’d – rather die –”
“Shut up.” El said, laughing slightly and shaking her head. “We should stop saying that.”
    “What?”
“That we would die for each other.”
“You’re right.” Mike nodded. “Someone could take us out really easily if they knew.”

“explain the senseless jokes of the internet to a girl that had lived in isolation so completely that her name was a number. Okay. He went to his laptop, sitting open on the coffee table, and started his powerpoint presentation.
“This first one is easy.” He said. “It’s a picture that’s just funny on its own, and there are a bunch of different kinds. His… His name is Pepe, and he’s weird. Just a warning.”
    “...Pepe.” El repeated. “Okay.”
Lucas moved the powerpoint forward to the next slide, the classic Pepe picture staring back at them. El screeched in laughter, clapping her hands over her mouth and collapsing into giggles on the couch. Lucas laughed in incredulity, having never heard her make that sound before, looking down at her. Her bangs were almost completely covering her face, but he could see that her eyes were closed as she laughed.
“I told you he’s weird!” He insisted, and she shook her head a little, letting her hands drop into her lap, one on each thigh.
“Just… Mouthbreathers call Mike ‘frog face’.” She said, giggling again when Lucas’s mouth fell open.
“You think Wheeler looks like Pepe?!”
“No, no!” She waved her hand desperately, shaking her head more. “Big eyes, that’s all.”
Lucas was too far gone. It was too funny. He had to tweet about it--@ RangerLuke: this just in, @mikeypaladin ‘s girlfriend thinks he looks like pepe --before attempting to explain what context Pepe was used in, which was nearly every context, and moved on. They skipped over Slenderman, because that was a little too close to the demogorgon. Evil Kermit was difficult to explain.
    “Talking to yourself, but bad?”
“You know!” He tried to think of a situation she could relate to. “Like… When you’re supposed to be doing something, but you’d rather do something else, kind of.”
She sat there for a moment, then her eyes widened.
    “The dishes.” She murmured.
“Were you supposed to do the dishes?” He asked, amused, and she nodded a little.

    “To: El
go ahead and go to sleep. we'll talk tomorrow.

    From: El
Yes okay. Hold on though I found this.
She was still typing, so he waited.

    From: El
    This is you

It was a picture, the words on the photo reading “the floor is appreciating your girlfriend”, above an image of a man lying facedown on the floor. Mike knew he should be worried about where on the internet Eleven was going to get photos like this, but the contents of the message had Mike surprised and happy all at once.

    To: El
you feel like I appreciate you?

    From: El
    Yes

The message was followed by a heart emoji, and suddenly Mike couldn't stop smiling, a familiar warm and happy feeling in his chest (that definitely wasn't heartburn, as Dustin had suggested). He was glad he was managing to be a decent boyfriend, despite the misgivings he occasionally had about not being good enough for someone like her. He wanted then to confess his love to her, but he knew that “I love you” wasn't something you said at near 11:00 p.m. on a Wednesday night through a text message.

    To: El
that's good, because I really do.

    From: El
    I do too

There was a silent moment of Mike staring at his phone screen, looking at the silly picture that had brought this conversation on before he realized that it really was time for them to go to sleep.

    To: El
    night El, sweet dreams.

    From: El
Goodnight Mike. You're my favorite person in the world.

Mike felt his heart skip a beat, feeling silly and happy all at once. The urge to tell her rose in him all over again, timing and etiquette be damned, but he knew he wanted to do this right.

    To: El
I have something I need to tell you tomorrow, alright? don't let me forget.

And the next day, he did. They walked home together like always, Eleven turning to look at him every couple of steps. Finally, a grin on his face, he swung their entwined hands and glanced back.
    “Yeah?”
“You have something to tell me.” She reminded him, as though he'd forgotten. As though he could forget this.
“I do.” He agreed. They were close to El’s house, the rest of The Party having branched off to stay in the neighborhood, and now they had nothing but trees all around them. He leaned down, kissing her quickly. She was smiling as he pulled back, and he tucked some hair behind her ear. He felt a jump of nerves in his chest as she looked at him, but shook the feeling off. He wasn’t afraid. He wasn’t expecting anything back from her; he had always been emotionally open and honest with El, and simply wanted her to know.
“I just had to tell you… I love you.”
Her mouth opened a bit as her eyes widened in surprise, her expression reminding him of the first time he had kissed her, the memory making him smile. He saw her searching her mind for something to say, and he waited. Finally, she spoke.
    “I’m shook.”
Mike was going to kill Lucas.”

    😂😂😂😂😅

The question had stuck with her all through the following week as she heaved in the fishing nets and washed off the rough skin of the elephants, the tight feeling in her throat unmistakable.

    What are you running from?

The answer haunted her as she kissed the random from the tiki bar, another tourist from Australia, callused fingertips creating fire along her hip bone, right where she had a tattoo of the chicken that was the official mascot of Poguelandia. She pushed him off of her, and ran her tongue along her teeth.

    It had been six years.

It couldn’t still be that after six years.

Or: After six years, a certain wedding of one John B. Routledge and Sarah Cameron brings Kiara back to Outer Banks. Six years of running should be enough time for Kiara to get over JJ. Right?

    Bookmarker's Notes

wow. the way i immensely enjoyed reading this! sexy times on a boat! lived in, immersive and one of my absolute faves 😊

“What is she throwing a tantrum about?” John B. rubbed the side of his face with the heel of his hand, his pajama pants looking suspiciously like something bought in a department store. The John B. of old used to sleep in old, ratty boxers, and the John B. of new wore that pants suspiciously appeared to be from an online boutique that probably upcharges everything. Times really have changed.
“Kie fought with JJ last night.” Kiara rolled her eyes when John B’s brows disappeared into his hair and finished up with her dry ingredient measurements. “And now she’s making him pancakes but won’t tell me what they fought about.”
“I woke up six years ago.” John B. rubbed his face again, and she huffed a small laugh. “You’re actually making JJ pancakes?” She opened the fridge and searched for the butter, her resolve feeling stronger than ever at the tone of her two very nosy friend’s questions. “This sounds like you two are getting serious. Jiara is back?”
“This conversation is over.” Kie set the butter onto the granite a little harshly and inhaled deeply. “Nothing is serious, and the fight was nothing even close to the ones we had during our relationship. He thought I was angry when I wasn’t, and since we are not even really on speaking terms, I can’t use the age-old method of having wild, ferocious; I lick his back sex to convince JJ that whatever fight we had was not that deep. That help clear things up?”
“No, gosh. Ew.” John B. squeezed his eyes shut in response, and Sarah’s face mask made it nearly impossible for Kie to know if that satisfied her itch for information. “You licked his back?”
“I could tell you a thousand other things I did to JJ, but I’m not really in the mood.”
    “What about JJ is lickable?”
“Don’t open that can of worms, please.” Sarah threw her hand up, and she struggled not to laugh in the tone of disgust that faced the inevitably horrible answer. “So, are you two talking now?”
“I’m being a civil human being if that’s the answer you’re searching for.” The stove was definitely hot, judging by how warm the kitchen was getting, and Kie searched for the vent on the overly expensive range. “JB, why is the pogue shit?”
    “Pogue shit?”
“The HMS Pogue.” She turned, and he looked a bit confused until he realized that she was talking about the well-loved boat that stranded Pope and Kiara the day before. “The motor literally died in the middle of the water.”
“You went out on the Pogue?”
    “I stole your keys.”
“You stole my keys.” She rolled her eyes.
“The repetitiveness of this conversation is inane, and yes, I stole your keys. You always leave them in the top drawer of the office, underneath the photo of Big John.” John B. considered this, and she poured her batter into the pan. At least the JJ conversation was over. She could do without Sarah’s drilling for another four months.
“Well, the motor is shit because it’s, like, twenty years old.” He sighed, and she checked to see if the edges were setting up properly, the bubbles beginning to pop. “I always said I would replace it, but I’m really busy at the shop because of tourist season.”
“Speaking of, how did you end up inviting JJ over for pancakes?”
“Didn’t we already do this?” Kie’s voice was flat, and she felt tension seeping its way into her shoulders. Sure, it would be an objectively bad idea to yell at Sarah for being nosy, but it’s also an objectively bad idea to keep barraging a person with questions that have already been answered. “Also, that topic has nothing to do with the surf shop.”
“Did you ask JJ to come over for breakfast, or did he ask you if he could stop by? They’re very important answers, Kie.”
“I asked her.” His voice startled her, and she turned around to see a very familiar fishing t-shirt and cargo shorts, his boots clunking from where he had walked in the apparently unlocked front door. “Thanks for making pancakes, by the way.” She nodded and turned around, his heavy footsteps signaling that, hopefully, the questioning was over. “Looking for these?” JJ dug his hand into his pocket and waved the keys, his brows a bit mischievous as John B’s eyes lit up.
“Yes. You knew that Kie stole the Pogue keys, right?”
“Yeah, I know she shipwrecked it, too.”
“The motor died; I did not shipwreck the Pogue.”
“I don’t know, Kie; when I found you and Pope, it looked bad. Like you were about to chow down on his leg.” She rolled her eyes and just shook her head. “Pope doesn’t have much meat to eat, though, so you would’ve probably starved.”
“A shipwreck is defined by the boat being broken by a force of nature, while the real reason the boat stopped was JB was el cheapo. Also, I wouldn’t have chosen to eat Pope. I’m trying to be vegan, and he’s too skinny.” There was a snort,"
