If he couldn’t have her free choice, he would make her see him in every meal enjoyed, in every cup of tea savoured. She would think of him when she wrote, when she played the qin, when she bathed, when she opened her eyes in the morning.
He had not a moment of peace from her, and yet she saw so little of his worth, feared him like he was some sort of beast.

Summary
Jiang Xuening is a poor student and an unruly young woman. She offers nothing of value to Yan Lin, but dares to accept his regard anyway. Xie Wei is not pleased with their entanglement, and is pleased even less when she comes to him requesting special instruction with the offer of nebulous service in compensation.
She doesn't mean what he gleans from her offer, but his own interpretation is superior. The service he demands from her will force her to part from Yan Lin, sparing his cousin the headache of an unworthy woman and a lifetime of strife. There are other benefits, of course. Actions with only a single benefit aren't worthwhile.

Summary
My stance on the matter is that A Splendid Match did have a perfect happy ending, one that matches the beginning of the show and the dramatic scale of the last few episodes.
And yet, I do understand the desire for more, for a 'peace after the storm' and 'they lived happily ever after' closure. Since it was not given to us, I wrote one. Be gentle =)
