Summary
Five years after Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston kick the bucket, the Curtis gang has recovered about as well as they're ever going to. Two-Bit's got a steady job, while Steve and Sodapop are expanding the DX's services to cover more car repairs and less working the gas pumps. Darry's got a new gig at an assembly line that brings in more money than roofing and the factory combined.
Above all else, Ponyboy Curtis has both a full-ride scholarship and an Order for Induction from the U.S. Military.
(or: how Ponyboy gets drafted, doesn't tell his brothers, and earns a punishment he never really deserved. He never believed life was all-too fair, anyway.)

“You said he was in a car accident—who was he with?” Darry asked.
The doctor got out his clipboard, looking down at it. “He was with another young man, and they arrived here on foot.”
“On foot?!” Soda said, eyes wide.
“Your brother was unconscious when he arrived, his friend was carrying him.”
“Who? Who was he with?” Soda pressed.
He glanced down at the clipboard again. “A Steve Randle.”
Darry and Soda’s eyes went wide as they stared at each other.
Or:
Steve and Ponyboy get in a car wreck during a severe Thunderstorm. Stuck alone, and injured they're forced to walk to the hospital, both a little worse for wear when they arrive.
When Pony is two hours late during a storm, Darry and Soda are pretty worried. A call from the hospital sends them both reeling.

Okay, so here’s the thing. She knew she wasn't unattractive. She was no Lydia or Allison but she could clean up pretty well when she wanted to. Hell, she’d gotten Jackson, of all people, to kiss her at their seventh grade dance so she knew she had something going in her favor. She wasn't a big girl but she wasn't anorexic-skinny either. Her boobs weren't bad either. They were a decent size, 38C, so she really couldn't complain.
She was taller than the average and she didn't have to stretch to kiss someone so that was a plus. Okay, so she wasn’t girly-girly. She could totally kick anybody’s ass at Halo and Black Ops. So what if she didn’t shave her legs every day or wear makeup or dresses and skirts? She was smart. She could quote pretty much every movie ever made and okay, she was a geek which would probably explain the whole no boyfriend thing. Not that she needed a boyfriend to feel secure in herself because Stilinski was 147 pounds of pure awesomeness and didn’t need a guy. Honestly, she just wanted someone to geek out over movies and comics and cuddle on the couch with, which might explain why Stiles Stilinski, winner of the No-Shave November Queen was shaving her legs.
