Summary
For as long as he can remember, Henry has always hated summer.
But then, he goes on a retreat for an undecided amount of time to this little idyllic seaside town, in a lovely private cottage, to write his second novel.
But then, unexpectedly, he meets Alex during an early and hot Saturday morning in July. And, he does the one thing he promised himself he will never do to protect his own heart. He falls hopelessly head over heels in love with him over the weeks. Along the way, trough fear and pain, he slowly but surely realizes that love might not be the worst feeling in the world after all.
It might even be the thing that makes him feel whole again.

Summary
Henry tells him he’s been on a date with another guy. Alex tries to be genuinely interested and happy for him, even though heart is dropping at the bottom of his stomach when Henry informs him that maybe they will see each other again soon.
And Alex is slowly dying from the inside.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Henry asks him while they eat dinner in front of the television with Empire Strikes Back playing in the background. “You’ve been oddly quiet this evening. And it’s your favorite movie,” he says as he points to the screen with his fork. “This is usually the part where you want to prove to me in many, argumentative ways how wrong I am about my preference for Return of the Jedi.”
Alex swallows around the words that are dangerously burning on his tongue. He wants to tell them. He wants to scream his heart out until every little noise in his head quiets down to nothing, until he feels like he can finally breathe again.
I'm scared to lose our friendship but love you, I love you so much and with all my being and it might very well burn me alive one day.
(Or, Alex is in madly love with his friend Henry and has to watch and suffer as he goes on different dates.)

“You need to tell him how you feel already. You can’t secretly pine like a Victorian maiden after one of the most handsome men on earth and never say a word to him about it.”
“I don’t want to ruin what we have,” Henry answers, but he’s not looking at Percy.
“What if you don’t though?” Pez argues behind him, in his back. “What if it’s a thing you both want but are too bloody stupid and dense to finally admit it to each other?”
“And what if it’s not? What, then? I can’t take that risk. I don’t want to lose him.”Because that’s the thing. The problem, really. Henry is head over heels in love with Alex. It’s all so easy to let his guard down and be his true, authentic self around him, he hadn’t meant for this to happen, for his stupid feelings to come in the way of their friendship. But, he’s been in love ever since he first saw Alex at the bar all those months ago, surrounded by lights and a dazzling smile that made his way straight to his chest.
From this very moment, Henry has had many more reasons as to why he’s falling hopelessly for a man he would probably never have the way he wants to.

Summary
They meet at a coffee shop.
Henry knows within their first interactions that Alex will be his absolute downfall.
For the first time in his life, Alex feels like he’s being understood completely and instantly by a stranger. Henry doesn’t seem to think of him as too much or not good enough. He gets him, he actually listens to everything he has to say, he cares. However, at the back of his mind, Alex is still afraid that Henry’s going to leave at some point, when he will finally realize, like nearly every relationship he tried to have with someone in the past, that he's not capable of handling all of him.
Henry, for his part, thinks that he’s entirely doomed if he doesn't keep Alex a safe distance away from his life and his shielded heart. It would just set him on fire. Because, he can’t possibly survive in a world where Alex, in all of his blazing and colorful light, exists near him.
The thing is though, neither Alex nor Henry seem able to stay away from each other’s orbit.

He hates that Alex can see all the ugly parts of him now, knows how weak and stupid he is, instead of the strong and reliable friend he’s tried to be for the last five years, since Henry moved here and accidentally stole Alex’s favourite spot at their local coffee shop.
“I’m sorry…” Henry says eventually, when he can’t stand the silence for a moment longer. It’s maybe the longest he’s ever known Alex to voluntarily be quiet for, and by the five minute mark it’s unnerving him.
“Hey,” Alex replies, reaching over to curl his uninjured fingers around Henry’s wrist, pressing lightly against the pulse point there, “you’ve got nothing to apologise for. Not ever, but especially not this, alright?”

Summary
The beach is always changing.
Alex finds it ironic that this is the first time in his life he's letting himself sit still, and it’s in a place that is never the same twice. Waves come in and replace the sand and silt with every swell. People leave behind footprints that mix and overlap and then wear away. Sand castles are built, destroyed, and built again differently.
It's a place consistent in its inconsistency.
But for now, it's home. Or something like it.

Alex doesn’t necessarily need a job—a full course load (plus some) is more than enough to fill his time—but he hasn’t had much of a social life since starting law school, and his coffee habit could use a few extra dollars. When June tells him the restaurant is looking for help, particularly on their Thursday Spaghetti Special night, he halfheartedly agrees. Everything that happens thereafter is technically her fault, a fact he likes pointing out any time she tries to yell at him for something, like serving uncooked garlic bread, or accidentally making a grown man cry, or breaking public indecency laws.
Or:
Alex works at an Italian restaurant and is very bad at it. Henry is a customer and doesn’t seem to mind.
