“You remind me of him,” Wiebe once said, the day they made Shane an ACE, only the second Alliance Cyber Envoy in human history. He is under no illusion that that wouldn’t have happened without Rozanov being the first, but he isn’t so sure if they really shared the same values. From what he’s heard, things regularly blew up whenever Rozanov got involved, and Shane is proud to think that they don’t tend to around him.
Shane Hollander is a camp cyber, born with a genetic mutation he didn’t ask for and put into the Cyber Adjustment & Maintenance Programme (CAMP) at the age of sixteen. A couple of years later, Ilya Rozanov is drafted by the North Atlantic Alliance & Council to undergo advanced genetic reprogramming to become one of their greatest assets — a draft cyber. Ten years later, both have become two of the best cyber soldiers the Alliance ever had. Only one is still a camper and the other one has been dead for almost two years.

“I don’t want to look at you right now.” Ilya’s voice is raw but firm. “I don’t want to talk to you. Go home.” Leaving the towel bunched up on the counter, he tries to leave.
No fucking way. Shane steps into his path and stops him. There is no way he’s letting Ilya walk away like that. And why the fuck is Ilya the one who is upset? He’s the one who brought up that stupid party in the first place. And he’s the one who can’t answer one fucking question.
“Would you choose me?”
Shane discovers how tired Ilya is of hiding and how much it hurts him that no one knows. Shane also discovers that he’s the asshole in this scenario and decides to change that, fuck the consequences. He can panic about it another day.

Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.
Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.
But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.
