Ryland Grace has completed his mission, and is living out his days with Rocky on Erid. They've received reports that Sol has returned to full luminance, so he can rest easy knowing Stratt saved the world after all. He's pretty sure it recovered in Earth's 2053. He goes to bed content.
He wakes up in an old twin bed in San Francisco, with the awful feeling that he's late for school. Or work. Or both. A glance at his phone is enough to rid him of that particular concern (it's Saturday), and fill him with so many others. Why is it 2019?

Creepy. Ominous, even. There’s a little code attached to the file that hides it from a system search. The only way I could have found it was an accident.
I open the file and a video log pops up. The play button blinks mockingly. The date at the corner of the log is two years before I first woke up on the Hail Mary. It would have been recorded when I was deep in coma-sleep. When everyone on board should have been deep in coma-sleep.
Ilyukhina’s slightly pixelated visage is sprawled across a pilot chair and she’s mid-chew on a twizzler.

There are many bad things about Rocky—as there are about any person I’ve ever met. And that isn’t even talking about myself. But the problem isn’t that he’s bossy, or swears like a sailor even though I can’t directly translate, or takes up more than half the space on my own gosh darn ship…
…No. The problem is that despite all his flaws, he’s too good.
Rocky is endlessly, painfully good.

You realise that you're pulling your limbs closer to yourself, hunkering down, and force yourself to relax. There's nothing to be scared of. Grace isn't sick, you would have noticed. Right? And even if it is sick, it's not dying, its ship is protected from radiation, so it won't be like- it's going to wake up. You will watch over it until it wakes up.
Grace has a nightmare. Rocky takes it badly.

“Oh, it’s a way for humans to tell each other they’re taken. To remember,” I say, popping a bunch more gummy bears into my mouth. Rocky makes a disgusted sound and I smile as I chew. “It’s just a nice way of showing they have someone they committed to.”
Rocky freezes. I don’t notice for a good few seconds, not until I get the pressing sensation that he’s staring at me, his lack of eyes irrelevant.
I turn to face him. He’s jittering, something like shaking from excitement or anger, I’m not sure.
“Rocky?” I ask.
“Grace have ring,” he points, and oh no. “Grace have mate? Why Grace no say!?”
I hold up my hands before he can get too excited, though I can already hear a familiar sound, a repeating joyful and confused song start to escape from him.
“No, no, no!” he freezes again. Deflates, a little. I sigh and run a hand down my face. “It’s… complicated.”

"You should teach me to read those before we get to Erid, so I can be polite." As Grace considered the linework, already picking up on some vague ideas from the shapes in Rocky's carapace, something else occurred to him. "So… I picked 'Rocky' because your outer shell looks like stone."
"And for inspirational story of athlete who defeats human system of poverty to become great champion. Eye of the tiger."
"Retroactively, yeah." Grace bent at the hips, getting to Rocky's 'eye' level. "So what'd you name me?"
