A death camp was not where Hiccup wanted to spend his adolescence. Not after finally making peace with the dragons. He came to terms with it, reasoning they could all just pick up where they left off when he got back in four years. He was wrong.
How does a man so twisted and broken from experiences too difficult to name pretend nothing had changed? How was Astrid supposed to handle what they'd done to him?
It would require acceptance. Trust on all sides, both for him to open up, and for her to stay.

"Exile still seems the best option, Stoick..."
Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.

How To Train Your Dragon AU: Valka and Hiccup were both taken the night of the raid. Hiccup is raised in a dragon nest alongside Toothless. Epic adventure and friendship ensue.
"The little dragon crooned softly, pupils dilating as he nuzzled against Hiccup's cheek. My son giggled, reaching his arms up over his head as he attempted to pet the Night Fury. I simply sat back and stared in amazement at their interaction. The hatchling took one of Hiccup's arms in his mouth, chewing softly. I gasped, jumping forward to push him away, only to notice that the dragon had no teeth. "What the...toothless?" I murmured in confusion. I could've sworn the other baby dragon had teeth. This one tilted his head, glancing up at me with an expression that read, 'you seriously thought I was gonna bite him?' I relaxed with a chuckle, letting him do as he pleased. If anything, Hiccup was enjoying the hatchling's attention, and kicked his legs happily. "Well, Toothless, meet my son, Hiccup," I introduced with a grin."
