Summary
John doesn’t even flinch when Father Garcia flicks his cigarette butt into the grass, crushes it beneath his heel, and then points the barrel of his shotgun right between his eyes.
Maybe John is afraid, buried deep beneath the haze of exhaustion. Maybe later when his battered head stops feeling like it's been stuffed with cotton and his ears stop buzzing like flies drawn to a rotting corpse, he’ll look back and wonder if he should have run while he had the chance to.
Instead, he almost laughs, a deep, hollow, and painfully empty thing that sounds too close to a sob. He almost laughs because after the month he’s had, a near stranger pointing a gun at his forehead barely scratches the bottom of the list of the worst dangers he’s been subjected to.
In which, surviving is the easy part. Living is the hard part.

“Maybe… Maybe you should try taking a break. You can always come back to your art later when you have the energy for it again. If you burn both ends of the candle for long enough, there won’t be anything left.”
A watery laugh bubbles up from Brassius and his chest heaves. “That’s the thing. I don’t know who I would even be without it. I don’t want to lose all that I’ve worked so hard on, but I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up either.”
Making art isn't always easy and change doesn't happen overnight, but they're determined to see it through to the end.

Lisa lets John’s arm drop into his lap and opts to cup his face with both her hands. She gently thumbs over his eyelids, brushing away any surviving tears and he leans into her touch. “I’m real, John. Do you believe me?”
He does. More than he’s ever believed in anything else before.
“I do.”
After everything, John and Lisa leave New Haven behind.
