Summary
Erik Lehnsherr has his life exactly as he wants it: his work, his mother, and above all his children. He has no room and no need for anything else.
Then a man crouches in front of his runaway twins in the Science Museum and starts talking about genetics, and Erik finds himself revising that opinion considerably.
He takes it slowly. He does everything right. And then he asks Charles to move in, and his seven-year-olds have a great deal to say about that.
Months later, single and thoroughly miserable, Erik spots a familiar figure across a busy London street. What happens next is, technically, Pietro's fault.

Charles looks up from his drink, eyes dancing. “You read Ginsberg,” he says, and then, “What am I saying—of course you read Ginsberg.”
Erik has read widely and studied extensively but is usually surrounded by people who assume he hasn’t. Charles has consistently been the exception to this. From anyone else, the comment would sound patronizing, but Charles says it as if it’s a wonderful fact that he’s somehow simply forgotten—right, of course sunshine feels good on your skin. Of course Erik Lehnsherr reads Ginsberg.
Erik's lips tilt up in half a smile. He feels something that Charles often makes him feel: the urge to rise to the occasion, to impress, to show off. He takes another drink of coffee, meets Charles’s eyes, then says, “I look at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world.”
Or: Soft sheets, post-sex coffee, and quoting literature as foreplay.

Charles Xavier meets Erik Lehnsherr in Paris, 1937. They spend the next two years with one another, stupid in-love, until war comes heavy in September 1939. Erik leaves for Poland and the Resistance movement there, promising to return. Charles is left in Paris, where Nazi jackboots march in, Summer of 1940. He becomes a member of the underground French Resistance, publishing illegal newsletters, leaflets, until news comes through in February 1942: Erik is dead. Charles throws himself into more dangerous work, meeting with Communists, helping derail a German train, and he does too much, goes too far. His friends find him safe passage out of France, out across the Mediterranean, to Morocco, Casablanca. It is here he finds Erik, alive.Bookmarked by Turq8
