    Summary

In old age, Shane returns to Russia to lay a portion of Ilya’s ashes to rest with his mother after also laying some of his ashes at the cottage they shared. Memories surface of their final days together, shaped by Ilya’s long struggle with a terminal illness and the emotional conversation they shared near the end of his life. Shane wrestles with grief, loss, guilt, and the difficulty of wanting peace for the man he loves, even as it means letting him go. Accompanied by their children, Katerina and Milo, he reflects on the contradictions of mourning: the pain of separation intertwined with gratitude for a lifetime of love. It is an exploration of love, loss, time and the way forward after tragedy.

    Summary

It isn’t long after their plates arrive that Dad says, “I’m glad this old place is still here. Remember how excited you always were to get poutine here after your games growing up?”

Shane nods. “Yeah, after a win, sure.”

Beside him, Ilya mocks a horrified gasp. “What? David, you, Mr. Canadian government himself, only let your growing Canadian boy have national dish on condition of victory? Explain yourself.”
