    Charlie paused, his hand still frozen behind his head. He raised a brow, his mind taking a second to process the single, offered word through the haze of his embarrassment.

    “Huh?”

    A patient, understanding smile touched the doctor’s lips
    “Call me Carlisle.”

    “Carlisle,” Charlie repeated, testing the name himself. It sounded gritty and rough on his tongue, a common stone compared to the polished gem of the doctor’s pronunciation.

    He couldn’t make it sound pretty.

    He could only make it sound real.
