    Summary

    “Would the honorable Mobei-Jun agree?”

    “WHAT!?”

There’s a loud crash, and everyone’s attention instantly flicks over to Shang Qinghua standing off the side. He seems to have dropped some large platter of something - he should not be doing something so lowly as serving things, he’s not a servant any longer. But it is very typical of him to mindlessly reach out and start doing whatever unfinished tasks he sees before him, grumbling all the while as if someone is forcing him into it. Right now, he looks gobsmacked. Pale and wide eyed and gaping in shock, looking shaken to his core.

“Marriage!?” Shang Qinghua demands, his voice high and strangled.

    Summary

Linguang-Jun ruins everything. He always does; it is his habit. When Mobei Li was eight he found some way, bribes, threats, or blackmail, to convince his tutor to attempt to put a knife through his back; he stopped attending lessons. When he was ten, he poisoned his favorite food, leading him to be terribly ill and nearly lose his life; he stopped eating it. When he was sixteen, he poisoned his horse in the presumed hope that it would buck him off and trample him during its death throes; he stopped riding horses.

The need for caution and survival dictates that he must cover every weakpoint, close off any avenue for another underhanded attempt at his life. Shaving his life smaller and smaller, making himself silent and unreadable, never betraying a preference or inclination that might be noted and exploited. The only way to avoid having the things he likes most used against him and thus ruined is to avoid showing that he likes them at all.

    Summary

Bursting onto a moonlit clearing, Yue Qingyuan sees it. Him. A tall, slender shape, his lower half a long and winding snake’s tail, the scales a dark and gleaming green and the body of it thick and solid. The upper half is human, all pale skin and long dark hair falling like ink. As Yue Qingyuan watches, the demon before him lets go of the mauled, bloody husk of an innocent mortal, raising his head to watch Yue Qingyuan from across the clearing. Bright red blood smeared all across his lower face, his eyes gleaming in the moonlight as he meets Yue Qingyuan’s gaze directly.

“Xiao-Jiu,” Yue Qingyuan croaks, frozen where he stands a dozen feet away.

Shen Jiu takes one look at Yue Qingyuan, and he is suddenly painfully aware of his white and black cultivator’s robes, his spiritual weapon sheathed at his side, the hilt in his hand.

“Don’t--” Yue Qingyuan starts, but Shen Jiu turns to slither away into the tree line before he can finish. The demon, fleeing the righteous cultivator.

Yue Qingyuan looks at the dead man that Shen Jiu leaves behind, and he lets him go.

Yue Qingyuan finally finds his childhood friend again.

    Summary

Mobei-Jun does not speak human. He does not speak human even a little bit, as Shang Qinghua has tested by saying absolutely unholy filthy things to him that should have gotten him instantly murdered, but instead only earns him a blank, annoyed stare.

“My king, please, it’s only water. It’s unpoisoned, see? See, I’ll drink some. Ahh, tasty, safe water! Please, drink it? You’re sweating so much, you’re, like, melting.” He helps Mobei-Jun drink the water. “... God I really want to lick the sweat off your neck.”

Mobei-Jun does not react. Ahaha, this is kind of fun. Except for all the ways that it’s so fucking inconvenient.
