Zane wants to build a memorial. Zane wants to answer for what he’s done.

A year after returning from the Never-Realm, Zane is ready to put all of that behind him. Truly. There’s just one problem—he cannot seem to let go of the feeling that there was no consequence delivered towards him, no evidence or acknowledgement of what transpired there. He just removed his ice and left. And there is no chance he will ever be able to move on without doing something. So, he decides, he will secretly create a memorial for every victim of his reign as the Ice Emperor, and when it is done, he will present it to the Never-Realm. It will be his atonement.
To do this, Zane starts to visit the Never-Realm every night to learn the names of the dead.
It does not go well.

Zane was used as a tool of genocide and the show will never explore what that truly means.

His mind was made up.
No Memory Switch, better to let nature take its course and not intervene, he trusts that his son will make the right decisions for himself even after he's gone.So, with a bit of random scribbling (and a small sigh at watching a few days of meticulous work go down the drain), Julien rolled up the small Memory Switch blueprint into a ball, and threw it into the fire.

Zane Julien, built by his father to protect, to help the people, and never strayed from this path for long, living most of his life as the Ninja of Ice.
Lloyd Garmadon is no longer the Green Ninja; they abandoned their gi, stripped themselves of their power, and no longer have that title attributed to themselves.
Where does that leave Zane? If they of all people quit, what does that make him? What does he do now?
Or: Zane has a lot of complex thoughts regarding Lloyd's recent life choices. Not all of them are good. Some of them aren't about Lloyd; they're about him. He struggles to deal with these, and sooner or later, they won't just be thoughts anymore.
