Granny nodded. It was a shockingly ponderous nod. "There's only one thing I need. And they had best let me keep it at the home. Everything else… can go anywhere it wants to be."
Only one thing. Well, Granny had always been a practical person, so it was probably something like a pair of good boots or a cast iron skillet, maybe a tool of some kind. "What thing is that?"
"Just… a little knicknack," said Granny. It sounded almost like a confession, the way she said it — and then she looked away, out the windows, and sighed. "Yes… just a little knicknack."
There was a depth to that echo that Emma couldn't even begin to map out. It contained decades of memories, or at least memories from decades ago. Something that felt older than she was. "Granny? Are you sure you're okay?"
