There'd been almost a certain comfort to... pining. Not knowing if one's feelings could ever be reciprocated, basking in the weirdness of their non-existent boundaries that they pushed a bit further every single day. They did that for years, too scared to break the perfect omeostasis of the unseen and the unspoken that ruled their friendship.

“And kill her after...” he deliberately mumbled it loud enough so Viola could hear him.
She shot him a death glare.
“What? I was joking! Can’t a guy make a silly joke about killing his betrayer he once called a friend?” Mono smiled innocently as if that joke wasn’t dark itself.
“That’s my mom you’re talking about, so you better be joking.” She put her hand on Mono’s shoulder. “Or else I’m gonna have to bury two bodies instead of one.” Viola patted him on the back and walked away.
Now it was her turn to smile oh-so-innocently.

All of this thought process happened in the longest, most torturous second Ekko ever lived.

Vi answers on the fourth ring, her voice groggy from sleep “Pow? Ugh, it’s 2:45 AM, why are you calling?”
Jinx opens her mouth to reply, but her sister cuts her off before she can get a word out, sounding more and more awake. “Wait a sec. Aren’t you in your room? Where are you?”
“Jeez, chill sis! I’m at Ekko’s”, a giggle escapes her lips for some reason. “Well, outside. Imma ‘bout to try what you told me”. The sentence comes out slurred, no matter how much she tries to keep her voice even.
She hears Vi curse under her breath “Jinx… are you drunk?”

Jinx has made a lot of questionable decisions in her life. Now, looking up at Ekko's window in the middle of the night, she idly wonders if she's about to make her worst one yet.
