Summary
Kyle Swift just wants to give Eric Bennett the experience he never had - fun, safe sex with a man, without all the drama that comes with casual dating. He’ll teach Eric important lessons that Kyle wishes he’d learned sooner, things that he can bring into a real relationship once he feels more confident. A relationship with someone more appropriate. So he doesn’t bring it up until late February, when he’s started falling in love and it’s feeling more and more like he’s been lying. And Eric has been falling hard too, so in this version of the story, he’s determined to find a way to navigate through the murky waters of Kyle’s trauma, emotional transference, and Eric’s own insecurities, to a healthy relationship that they don’t feel the need to hide.
Then they proudly reopen The Kingfisher together, and on opening night Kyle has an interaction with the newly outed Hollanov that teaches Ilya a thing or two about boundaries, and helps Shane feel a little more comfortable in a queer space.

A kitten blinked back at him, eyes mothlike but focused. Fluffy grey fur shot out in all directions, giving the creature the look of a twitchy, frazzled rain cloud. Bat-like ears flickered this way and that, and little white dappled paws drew in close when Ilya reached out a hand. All at once, the little body let out a fantastic, puffed-up hiss; forceful enough to almost knock itself over.
Ilya pulled his hand away, grinning. “Well done, kotenok, very fierce. You must be a lion. Yes, I think so.” He glanced around him, saw no one, then peered back around the tire. “I think maybe you escaped the zoo. So maybe I bring you back.”
_________________What if Ilya Rozanov had a cat the whole time? And, better yet, what if Shane was jealous of said cat?

They had an early flight.
That’s how this whole fucking thing started.
If they’d just flown into Boston in the afternoon, like they usually did, none of this would have happened.
Shane would have gone to Ilya’s house, stayed overnight, and been back in his hotel room before breakfast. He wouldn’t have gone for a walk, and Hayden wouldn’t have figured out exactly who Boston Lily is.
But no, they had an early flight.
And now Shane feels like he’s about to die.
