Summary
In the privacy of his own head, Essek marveled at the family the Mighty Nein had found in each other. A handful of people, seemingly with very little in common, and they had forged their own path, together.
The problem with that strong sense of family the Mighty Nein shared, though, was how incredibly difficult it was to get someone on their own. Such as Caleb, to pick a completely random example.(or, Essek really just wants a minute of privacy with Caleb. It takes a lot of trial, and even more error.)

Summary
Caleb was a creature of habit - the dome, the wire, the arm scratching, the constant running.
So they met in the library, as had become the habit.Bookmarked by TheGeekyGay

Summary
A clamour of voices erupted.
“We’re invited to a ball? Do we get to buy fancy-”
“Why are you having a ball-”
“We are the worst people you could’ve invited.”(or, the Nein are invited to a ball, and Essek doesn't seem happy about the whole idea of a ball to begin with. Caleb wants to know what's up, because of course he does)

Summary
He has a soulmate, and he must manipulate them and use them. He has someone whom he cannot lie to, and he must deceive them.
He has someone he might be happy with, and he tore that chance asunder three years ago, when he slipped two Beacons into his wristpocket and teleported away to the Empire.
(In which you cannot lie to your soulmate. Which makes things difficult, if you are Essek Thelyss, and you were raised a liar.)

Summary
“I… I actually have a favor to ask.”
The reaction at the table was inevitable and it stung. Smiles grew wary and both Beauregard and Veth crossed their arms immediately, Veth sizing him up with a critical look.
“What kind of favor?”
Essek felt the blood shoot into his cheeks- by the luxon, this had been a terrible idea. But it was too late now.“I… my Den’s annual meeting is coming up, and I need a plus one, to put it simply.”
The Nein still all stared at him, brows furrowed.“Is it a political meeting?”, Caleb asked.
“It’s more of a family get-together, to be honest.”, Essek confessed, feeling very sheepish.
“But why do you need someone to go with you?”, Jester asked, scrunching up her nose.
Well, there it was. Essek fidgeted with his sleeve before he replied, as dignified as possible, “Frankly, because I am tired of my family’s burning questions about why I never bring any company.”
The resulting shriek Jester let out made him jump- and not only him it seemed.“You need someone to pretend to be your daaaaaaaate?”
