Summary
After years of legal complications, it's finally time for the reading of Manfred von Karma's final will and testament. In need of some moral support, Edgeworth requests that Phoenix supply his 'consultation services' and accompany him to the von Karma family estate in Germany (despite having been disbarred for two years and just about zero knowledge of inheritance law).
Sure, Phoenix had been expecting to deal with the ensemble of judgey relatives (not literally, thank god), jetlag, crushing homesickness for his daughter, and even von Karma's tragic interior design choices. A whole murder case, however? That he hadn't accounted for. (Which, in retrospect, may have been a bit of an oversight because he and Edgeworth really do seem to be magnets for this kind of thing...)

Summary
In a sense, forgoing shaving consistently altogether is a logical progression. The toughest case of all just took a wrecking ball to everything Phoenix built for three years. Where there was once no time to spend on keeping the clean, professional look, now there is simply no reason.
What does not make logical sense is the way staring at Phoenix’s prickly jaw scrambles Miles’s insides. The joints in his fingers tingle and there’s molten lava sinking from the pit of his stomach to his ankles.
Such a strong reaction surely means Miles has an opinion on this change. He is full of opinions and they are often better off being kept inside his head until he gets behind the prosecutor’s bench. Snarky comments are easier to generate than greetings more often than not.
Not a single jeer comes to mind. Miles’s tongue darts out to wet his lips.

Summary
He spent the whole day curled up on the bed, methodically sorting the letters by date. Then, when he was done, he started again, this time sorting them by topic—Phoenix had a lot to say. School, Larry, the Signal Samurai, Miles, theater, Miles, school, Miles Miles Miles Miles— He gave up when he realized all of the letters could be put in a single impressive pile.
On the third day his stomach refused to digest any more Absolut. He didn't feel any better, his mind wasn't any clearer, and the letters kept blurring, and he couldn't remember anymore if Phoenix had broken his arm before or after he had chipped his tooth. His heart thumped in his chest as he started sorting again, simple—read and unread. There had to be an answer and he knew he would eventually find it—if only he committed every detail of Phoenix’s life to memory the same way Phoenix had done to him over the years maybe he too would know what to do. He wondered, if Phoenix’s job was to save me, what is mine?
If Phoenix had been there, would I have let him save me?
Miles Edgeworth leaves. Miles Edgeworth reads. Miles Edgeworth gets better.

Summary
The Japanifornia Legal Fellows County Annual Retreat was a yearly event and a yearly dread in Miles Edgeworth’s life. Every year since he had left the Von Karma estates he had been forced to participate in the glorified corporate retreat, wasting four full days of his life that he would never get back and returning to a mountainous email backlog with a tension headache that reduced his productivity for at least the next day and a half.
Then again, in previous years the corporate retreat hasn't featured a jewel theft, his sister, or his long-lost friend.

Summary
A whole year has passed since the second DL-6 trial that had exonerated Miles Edgeworth. Many things can change in a year, and Phoenix hopes dearly that they had. He isn't particularly closer to Edgeworth than he was a year ago, though not from a lack of trying.
At least the trial is over and they had put that whole thing behind them. A year is enough time to at least *start* healing, right?
... right?
