    The man who had just arrived looked exactly like A-Jiu!

     

    An immediate and inexplicable surge of hatred and envy rushed through A-Jiu’s body. This is what he could have been.

     

    He could have porcelain skin instead of this sallow complexion. He could have shiny, thick hair instead of the wilting strands hanging from his head. He could have a spark in his eyes, he could have pleasing softness to his face and muscles on his frame…

     

    He could have all that because there was a version of him that did! Yet he didn’t. He had nothing.

     

    When A-Jiu is summoned one morning he expects to play the pipa or the qin for some patrons while his sisters dance. He expected to watch disgusting old men leer and paw at girls young enough to be their daughters and granddaughters.

    Instead he is lined up for interrogation. Two cultivators from Cang Qiong Mountain Sect are there to investigate the deaths of five men, but instead of finding a murderer they find another victim.

    A-Jiu himself, a cauldron... and more importantly Shen Qingqiu's twin brother.
