Summary

It comes out almost pleadingly, the desperation Gustave tried to suppress for months now bleeding into his voice.
Something softens in Verso’s expression.
Or: the Maelle ending. Coming to terms with being brought back and repainted. Gustave is looking for some answers, so he goes to the one person who can provide them. Verso is absolutely done with this life, but feels obligated to at least talk to him.
They find that being a copy of a dead man is less unbearable when you're not alone.

Back in the Stone Wave Cliffs, he had come to peace that this was where his journey ended—For those who come after, right?—but it seemed like his story wasn't done just yet. Maelle had, somehow, given him another lease on life, and this time, he could live it. He could grow old. He could do things simply for the sake of doing them; every waking moment didn't have to be dedicated to trying to solve the issue with the Paintress, with preserving their civilization.

After responding to a vague letter with no discernible names though, he and the mysterious 'V' begin to exchange letters back and forth, forming a friendship over long distance. Gustave couldn't possibly be falling in love with someone he had never met, right?

A sharp movement in the audience catches his eye, beyond the halo of the stage light.
At first he thinks it’s Maelle, that she’s spotted him doing something that she doesn’t like, doesn’t fit the perfect image of it in her head, but…
It’s not Maelle.
No, it’s Gustave.
Gustave knows something's wrong with Lumiére. With himself. With Maelle. And he knows he'll find answers with the mysterious pianist. And Verso sees.

It takes Gustave an embarrassingly long time to realize the truth - Monoco is in love with Verso, and perhaps always has been.
No matter how he might feel about Verso, well, it's clear they're meant to be together and he'll do whatever he can to support that.
Turns out, the best thing he can do is to stay wrapped up in Monoco and Verso's arms - where he belongs.

When you've been immortal for as long as Verso has, it's inevitiable that some of your deaths may have been more purposeful than others.
Picking fights that are impossible for you to win, making plans that are a little too risky, not following medical advice when you really should be following it to the letter; Verso has done those sorts of things thousands of times. Maybe even more than that.
Fuck, that's not even mentioning all of times that he—That's not the point, though.
The point, Verso thinks, is that he wasn't planning for this.

Gustave tilts his head, studying him. Worry in his gaze is visibly winning over everything else. Verso feels almost exposed — too open, too easy to read; it’s always like this with Gustave.
It’s almost comforting, with Gustave. Like a permission to stop hiding.
Or: healing is not linear. Verso knows it all too well.
