'Harold stood very still. "No, John — no," he said, turning towards him. John stared back, half afraid, half wanting to believe him. "Or at least — " Harold stopped, and then he cleared his throat and said, desperately, "It seemed worth living."'

The Texas sun beating down was merciless, almost a physical weight on his shoulders. John couldn't move even to change the angle: the collar was tight, the cuffs were tight, and the chains had been pulled to their limits.

Such a sweet and lovely little story.
Love this line: "His last thought before sleep claimed him again was that he had become a jewel, firmly cradled in its setting, shining and safe."
