Summary
Leaving another gunfight and Dead or Alive posters behind in Norleans, Damen is on the run with some of his family’s wealth riding into the sparsely populated Great Plains toward the Rocky Mountains, pistols at his hips. With his family betrayed behind him, he expects never to return to The Ohios or the Texas Territories or Vèrginia, but with no specific goal in mind. Seeing a rough hand-carved sign with an arrow and the word “GOLDCUF” nailed to a log, he turns his horse and heads up into the mountains.
In a saloon, the painting behind the bar catches his eye. In the painting: a perfectly shaped lounging body, strong yet slender and lithe, in a deep blue corset, laced tightly through dozens of holes, top to bottom down the front, not quite exposing anything, yet giving the impression that any slight movement would reveal delights beyond belief. The top strings hung untied, begging to be slowly unstrung. Staring directly into the viewers’ eyes. Taking you straight on in challenge. Daring you to come closer and warning you to stay away. Bold and waiting to own you, not soft and yielding waiting to be possessed. No come-hither smile. Instead, the confident, chilly, in-control sapphire gaze of the town’s ice-cold bitch.

Berenger took a breath, looking past Ancel rather than at him. “You didn’t want to talk to me before.”
“I was angry, before,” Ancel said. “Do you blame me for that?”
“Of course not.”
“Even I can’t hold a grudge for five years,” Ancel said. He smiled, faintly. “I’d get wrinkles. I have to maintain what’s left of my looks.” He gestured to his face.

And there it was.
Sitting innocuously on page 26, was a photo strip that looked it had been taken from a photo booth.
On the right, Nicaise absently recognized Damen. He was maybe a few years younger, and a lot more happy. His face was practically glowing in contentment.
On the left—
On the left was Laurent. Also younger, also happy.
or: Nicaise buys some secondhand textbooks for cheap. He just hadn’t expected to find a photo of Laurent and a stranger together in it.

penguin and Wren together?!? I might be on the verge of dying here. Whatever it is, I'm pretty sure it's going to be amazing. Only one chapter up so far (3/28/25) now it is 4/18/25, three chapters are up and I have read them all and they are very good. No surprise. The UST begins somewhat in the first chapter, but revs Up quickly when we get into Laurent’s Head. … And now the final chapter is up and read! Overall, this is an imaginative, creative, and entertaining reimagining of the roles that the two of them might play in a modern universe.

“No one will see me,” Damen said placatingly, opening the doors to the balcony. He propped one open with a small heavy stone, ensuring that the gap of about six inches wasn’t at risk of opening wider. “Everyone is still getting drunk in the great hall. No one will be looking outside.”
“If Prince Laurent even mentions that he thinks he’s seen something—”
“Prince Laurent won’t say anything because he won’t even notice my shadow,” Damen said, dousing the lamps in the room and plunging the two of them into darkness. “This is a reconnaissance mission only, Nik. I promise you.”
