She could tell by how, when she first saw his face, her eyes caught, refusing to obey her brain.
She could tell by how, when she heard him speak, it seemed to echo across her ears. Her mind subconsciously replaying it over and over, infatuated.
She could tell by how, when he looked at her, her mind went blank, her lungs stilled, her heart skipped.
It wasn't quite love at first sight. It felt like her body had always loved him and her mind was only just catching up.
And she hated how when he berated and insulted her, told her she was a bad soulmate, she just couldn't get over how pretty his eyes were.
She never stood a chance.

“—I hurt you,” Susie finished. She chewed on the concept, the edges of her voice frantic, her throat thick. “Because you deserved it.”
“Yes.” Kris pressed her hands against their chest. They smiled in a way that failed to be reassuring. Each desperate breath shuddering through their lungs confirmed everything Susie didn't want to know. “S’fine. It’s okay.”
Kris burned like a charred pan straight out of the oven, or an oil fire stoked by liquor. Susie reeled away. “You—you were trying to set me up,” Susie accused, trying to edge words around the chasm opening in her gut. “You were trying to get me to hit you.”
Kris wants Susie to hurt them. They need her to hurt them. Susie isn't as on board with the idea as they are.

Summary
When a simple C-rank mission turns into a straight-up nightmare, the members of Team Seven narrowly escape with their lives. They end up stuck in the middle of nowhere, each of them injured and forced to rely on one another for help.
They’ve only been a team for a couple of weeks, still distant from one another, still trying hard to prove themselves. But when they’re all hurt and struggling desperately to survive, they have no choice but to lower their walls.
Stranded far away from the village, Team Seven fights to get back home safely – but with help impossibly far away, with their food supplies shrinking and with their injuries slowing them down, their journey becomes more difficult with every step.
In the wake of their struggle, though, their bonds grow steadily stronger.
