He blinked at me, like I was stupid or crazy. I felt like both.

Ponyboy grew up to be an author. His English essay got published and he went on to write more young adult novels, some about real people he's met, others fictional. In this alternate universe, he replaces S.E Hinton. He has a wife, Cathy Carlson, she's a teacher at the local high school and they have a daughter, named Nancy. She has beautiful brown hair and green eyes, much like Ponyboy. He does an interview over The Outsiders after it got turned into a movie.
"The film affected me so much that I started calling the actors by their greaser names, regardless of what other movies they were in." He chuckled. "My daughter absolutely hates it. She’s a huge movie nerd, just like I used to be." Ponyboy narrowed his eyes and adopted a playful, dramatic whine, imitating his daughter. "She’d look at me and say, 'Dad, his name is Ralph Macchio! Not Johnny Cade!"

He glanced down at the clipboard again. “A Steve Randle.”
Darry and Soda’s eyes went wide as they stared at each other.

Steve and Ponyboy get in a car wreck during a severe Thunderstorm. Stuck alone, and injured they're forced to walk to the hospital, both a little worse for wear when they arrive.
When Pony is two hours late during a storm, Darry and Soda are pretty worried. A call from the hospital sends them both reeling.

It wasn't fair, but it was happening: Ponyboy was being taken out of Darry's custody and placed with his Uncle Ronny, an out-of-touch and unheard of farmer someways south of Tulsa. Ronny wasn't all bad, but he wasn't at all good- even still, nothing could have prepared Ponyboy for the visitor who stood to ruin both of their lives at any cost.
