“Steve. Run.”
Something cracks in the woods to his right. Steve stops breathing, holds it in his chest for a burning moment and waits.
“Move, Harrington!”
There’s a screech and a growl and a hiss and the sounds are far too familiar for Steve to not immediately react. He bolts, tears through the damp undergrowth, slams into a fallen trunk and winces, but pushes up and jumps the log like a track star. He dives through overgrown bushes and slips down a slick-with-dead-leaves hillside that spills him onto a gravel side road.

Or, the one where Steve has nightmares, Eddie is somehow alive and tagging along in said nightmares, and they both realize there is more to this whole dream sharing, sleepwalking business than they thought.

“Wait… what?” he manages to say, barely noticing the moment Burnin’ awkwardly slips out the roof access door to escape the impending conversation. He sort of wishes he could follow, but Enji is blocking the path and while it wouldn’t be the first time he’s leapt off a roof to evade an uncomfortable conversation, he can’t bring himself to do it with Enji.

After years of living on unstable ground the people of the world moved to rolling cities. Musutafu is one of the largest. It sits high atop large wheels and moves forward at an ever steady pace. Stopping the Great Machine isn’t possible. It would send their city into chaos and would put thousands at risk of being killed during an inevitable earthquake. As High Engineer, Enji Todoroki’s job is to see that never happens.
That is, until Musutafu is attacked by the Liberation League - a group claiming the High Minister and Senators have been lying to Musutafu's citizens. To save the Great Machine, Enji must join the High Surveyor on an emergency trip outside of Musutafu to hunt down the resources needed to repair the engine. He isn’t looking forward to working with Hawks. He’s young and cocky and enjoys blatantly pushing every single one of Enji’s buttons, but Enji is determined to survive the wilds of the ground city and find the materials needed to save the city.
Gaining a new perspective on Hawks wasn't in the plans. And discovering a dark secret along their journey shakes Enji's world far more than the earthquakes ever could.

“Fuck no, don’t bring me into this. You did this all on your own, dumbass,” Rumi snorts. She pokes him in the cheek with a well-manicured nail and Hawks squeaks out of reach.
“What am I gonna do?”
Rumi cackles. “How did it get this far anyway?”
How indeed.
Hawks glares at a point on the wall across from him and recalls just how everything spiraled so fantastically, horribly, wildly out of control.
