Snow falls in silence. Aymeric's chest tightens when Estinien's dark eyes find him again. There's need in his gaze, desperation, maybe something like dread. But before Aymeric can try to retreat, to laugh off the suggestion and start toward the barracks instead, Estinien takes his hand. He has to look away, feeling his hand in his. Estinien's voice, when he does speak, is as soft as the falling snow.
"Lead the way."

Our dragoon has only just left to return to you. I believe he meant to tell me about you, but as usual his words were hopelessly locked behind his teeth. Truly, he cannot bear to expose his tender heart. However, it assured me he has not an inkling of our plan. I do not envy your task of telling him of your impending trip, however I find myself eager to see the look on his face when all is revealed. Your accommodations are well prepared and I look forward to finally meeting you face to face this Heavensturn, not to mention the revelries I feel sure will follow.

Summary
The moment their friendship had crossed the line to lovers—although they can hardly be called such, having never shared so much as the briefest of kisses—Aymeric had stepped back, asked Estinien to marry him, and promptly informed all and sundry that he was betrothed. At that point, Ishgard’s ancient customs surrounding the propriety with which betrothed couples were to act had slammed into place, and Estinien was denied the chance to act upon his desires until after the wedding, which seemed to stretch further and further away with every passing day.

Estinien holds Thancred's gaze, “I've had a lengthy conversation with Aymeric about it. He's well aware of the situation.”
Thancred stares at him, seemingly struck speechless. He doesn't say anything for a long few moments.
“He doesn't... mind?”
Estinien feels his face warm further. “Far from it. He said it's fine for me to pursue it.”
“‘Pursue’?” Thancred considers his words and must find there is no insincerity in them. He leans closer, and the look in his eyes is warm, relieved. The teasing lilt to his next words is soft and private. “Is that so? Didn't realize I got so well under your skin, Wyrmblood.”
Estinien scoffs, turning from him, even as a warmth curls in his chest at the smile on Thancred's face. “You've an unruly ego already. I wasn't looking to inflate it any further.”
After Ultima Thule, Estinien spends the summer in Thavnair. What he doesn't expect is for Thancred to join him.

Summary
When they last saw one another, it had been in the infirmary following the dragoon’s possession. Aymeric was steadfast at his bedside, clutching his hand and biting back tears as he sat vigilant and restless.
He hardly slept then, either. Instead he whispered prayers and muttered confessions of love and devotion through choked sobs. It kept him up to wonder if Estinien had heard his desperate pleas, and if that was why he hadn’t returned. Much like a cat, he frightened easily and was left bristling and wary at the first sign of change.
Estinien seemed a new man when he awoke, no longer bound by the shackles of his vengeance, his grief, or the slow corruption of his aether. Had they been alone together at that moment, Aymeric was sure he would have kissed him.
