an AU where it is Iguin that takes on Coco as an apprentice instead of Qifrey [though Qifrey has a major part in this story]
Coco knew logically that there was magic that was not taught. Magic that could help the sick and disabled. Magic that could improve the lives of others. Laws, they say. There are laws that ban witches from practicing the full extent of their magic, laws that ban them from helping heal the sick, even helping them. They way of the Pointed Caps are as selfish as the Brimhats are cruel. She will find a balance between the two that will help the people of her world, for better or worse.

“That’s too bad. A brimmed hat would’ve looked very nice on you, I can tell.” As she lightly tugs at the braces around their wrists. Clicking off both pairs, she turns on her feet and approaches the portal once more.
“But what if we could teach you the ways of healing? Of spells letting you save what was lost?”
An eye glistens in the light beneath the pointed hat. Of dangling ornaments and a tied-up ribbon swinging in tow.
“Unshackled from your self-imposed restraints? Of being granted the freedom and power to use magic to its limits?”
A cloak drapes down fully as the figure lands gracefully on the ground. An arm outstretched to the girl on her knees.
“Wouldn’t you like to be a true witch?”
And Coco couldn’t help but stare at Iguin. At the eye of the world. Time seems to pause, as if making fun of her dilemma. And at this moment, grabbing that hand doesn’t seem so bad.
-Or Iguin appears, Coco comes along with the brimmed hats, and things change.

Summary
Sayeon Lee chokes on her aberrancy every day of her life.
Even before she knows what her essence looks like, she's still quite visibly an aberrant- after all, only an aberrant could survive Rapture harvesting. Only an aberrant could survive the kind of stress that leaches all color from their bodies.
Only an aberrant could be known as "the weakness of the Sea Wolves." Given that such comments are usually made in reference to her ghostly appearance, she can only imagine that she's living evidence of their failure, not least because she refuses to be anybody's weakest link.

"Coco," Quifrey tries gently, attempting to get those shineless amber eyes to dart his way, to meet his single pool of crushed-up peaks of glaciers. He gets her attention, but not her sparkle. "What happened to your mother? Did you try forbidden magic?"
Those petit lips, hardly younger than twelve twist into an unreadable expression, something hardened and something jaded Quifrey doesn't want to admit is aged knowingness. "Sensei," she says, the title slipping from her tongue easy as anything. "What's so wrong with it?"

Coco goes back to the beginning - but not quite. After her mother becomes crystallized, she goes back. Back again.
